I heard this was a fairly questionable piece of "research" sponsored by the Chinese government who are increasingly getting worried about free communication and a "Chinese spring". Obviously they can use this to crack down on blogs and twitter.

Drinking and drugs can be good for your brain. I'd have to question the veracity of this study.

Also addicting or compulsive behaviour in relation to the internet may be a cause of something else, like schizophrenia or narcissism, which are more common now due to using the internet. I really would have to question this.

The use of the word "damage" in the article/video is incredibly misleading. It implies actual damage to neurons (such as that which is caused by some drugs). Instead what seems to be the case is certain areas in the brain are reduced in size in internet addicts compared to non-addicted people (possibly because the addicts are using these areas much less).

The rest of the video seemed to be saying : people who are addicted to the internet show the sorts of brain changes you would normally associate with addiction.

It seems the media will spin a story out of anything. It wouldn't bother me so much if people didn't vote based on this sort of misinformation :mad:.

I would seriously doubt that anything of the sort has been discovered, rather that the entire paper is a fraud from start to finish, something that unfortunately China is well known for.

The ruling party thinks a bit like this: if the internet can be made out to be like drugs, bloggers, twitterers, and social media users are like drug dealers, right, and so should be imprisoned for the public good, just like that great firewall, keeping out impure influences.

That social media and the internet were a vital part in organising the uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa would never cross their minds of course.
