Led Lenser P7 (are they any good for foxing )

Comments

    Hey all

Im thinking of purchasing a led lenser p7 and was just wondering could anyone give a good/bad opinion on them ,are they suitable for lamping foxes on there own or do you need something more powerful ,it will be going on a .22 mag rifle .
the link below is the model i'm considering

    http://www.sportsden.ie/camping/led-lenser-torches/led-lenser-p7-gun-mount-kit-4-x-aaa-170-lumens.html

    Thanks

They would be grand on a .22mag within 100-120 yards i reckon. We used one for a while but we always have 2-3 lamping so we have a lamp man with us.
IMO they wont replace a hand held lamp but come in handy if you go out on your own and dont have a scope mounted lamp. The beam isnt as strong on them so you wont be able to spot foxes and call them in.

You'd be better off buying a m7r. It's rechargeable so you'll save a fortune on batteries

I have one and they are only good with fresh batteries on dark nights with no moon. If theres a moon at all they don't do much at all, its difficult to properly identify your target with them, they are a great little light but not a replacement for a proper lamp, they are great for hunting around fields with a shotgun, particularly in summer when the silage is just cut.

+1 that's the same take I have on the p7 too, definately worth having as a piece of kit but dont expect too much from them!

They are great to have in the pocket to save the battery in the lamp to find what you just shot.

I reacon the P7 is a great little torch but there is definitely an issue with losing power after a few hours. I have a collection of batteries that still have power in them and are handy for remotes etc all because you start losing power in the torch. Led Lenser have sorted this out with the rechargable models but they do cost extra. I my opinion aswell I reacon you would be better to buy a P7 Gun Mount and a set of Filters and dont bother with the pressure switch. It is of course personal preference but out of all the pressure switches I supplied I took nearly all of them back, the reason being that you must keep constant pressure on it and when your tring to keep a rifle steady and take aim this seems to be very off-putting as the light keeps flickering. I dont understand why they cannot make one that you can just click on and off:confused: There is always a debate wether torches are better than a light and battery pack and again it is personal choice. I do believe that shortly we will all use torches as they are a lot handier and save you carrying around battery packs and wires but the problem I see with all L.E.D. torches is the sheer intensity of the light coming off them. Filters will sort this out but at home we have bought L.E.D. Lights that replace our standard GU10's and they have the same sort of "warm light" you get off the halogens so hopefully the manufacturers will do the same sort L.E.D's in the torches soon to try and give off the same light as the Light Forces etc but Im sure its not as simple as that. Happy hunting with whichever you pick:D

The P7 is ok out to about 120 yards which is fine for HMR or Mag use. I got over the batteries issue by buying a set of rechargeables. If I was to buy again I'd probably go for the M7r.
The gun mount is one item I don't like at all. It sits the torch too far above or away from the scope and it wouldn't stay steady. I got a figure 8 scope clamp and a set of UTG weaver quick detach rings and it works much better

Well I bought the new X7R from Moby30 and it is a very good light.
Had it mounted on scope the other night a shot four foxes.
The only fault is that you can't get filters for them but there is ways around this too, make my own.

I didnt read the rest of the replies, but I have one on the 243 and I wouldnt be without it. Its not as good as some of the bigger lights, but if your like me and you go out on your own and dont have a dedicated lampman by your side well then the P7 is perfect... its not too heavy, if you have the mount no messing with trying to hold the rifle and light at the same time and it gets you out to about 100 yards easily..

but saying all that, you cant get filters (or if you can I havent seen them), its hard enough on the batterys and I found on one of my rifles I couldnt get good clearance with the mount and whatever way the light was reflecting off the barrel it was comming back into the scope and I was losing maybe 1/3 of the picture... that was a right pain in the ass.

Scope mount ;) Clip on, bang, job done.

I had a reflected light issue when I first put on the T8. Solved it by doing two things:
    • Moved the scope mount as far back on the scope as possible.
    • Put black electrical tape covering the bottom 1/3(ish) of the sunshade of the scope (the sunshade also helps remove reflection, and it keeps the tape well, well away from the lens).

The second point may help your situation with barrel reflection.

Wouldnt go out without my p7. When i had the hmr i used to lamp alone most nights and shot dozons of foxes under it. You can pick up eyes from a good distance out but wouldnt make the fox out till it was closer.

They are not a permanent substitute for a big lamp but i defo wouldnt go out without it and now with the 223 iv gone out on my own a few times just with the p7.

i find my p7 hard on batterys and to clearly make out a fox not just the eyes i rekon its only good to 80yrds or so,ileave mine mounted on the scope alot and when iv picked a fox up in the lightforce and hes coming in i switch to the p7 when im lamping solo

Funny enough, I think it was a picture you may have posted that gave me my current idea of putting a sock over the barrel. Its a great job so long as it doesnt rain.... :D

Can't remember now, don't think I had any pics of socks up though.

These few photos might help you. Its a very simple clamp that holds any torch onto a shotgun or rifle scope etc, there is also a bike clamp that a few people have used. I never had a problem with the torch moving or getting loose with this gun mount unless you were not using the piece of rubber that comes with -which I keep losing so what i did was glue a small bit to to each side of the mount or someone else told me they cut two small pieces off a bicycle tube ant pull them over each side of the clamp also.
Would also like to point out that you can get filters for the P7 and M7r but they are sold as an "Intelligent Pouch" which is basically a pouch that your supposed ti put the P7 into and it has a coloured filter on the top of it but you can just pull the cap off and put it directly onto the torch.:confused::confused:You also get four colours-Red Yellow Green and Blue.

For some reason some of the pics are upside down-Sorry

I had the same problem when I changed scope and even with the neoprene sock on the silencer it was effecting it so came up with this idea-Its not going to win any awards but it works perfectly-I just used some of that elastic cord that get on scope covers and it holds the lens cap in just the right position.

    cheers marc

I use a set of Energiser AAA's and they work fine. I can't say what time you'll get out of them, I've had them in before Xmas and they haven't let me down yet

Well moby, what model led lenser is that on your rifle?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 166 ✭✭marcp

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 506 ✭✭✭moby30

Its the X7r Declan. I only had that when I was doing the photos. I still use the M7r when out shooting.

I get my batteries from 7Dayshop in the UK,buy on line the are 2900 and I find them very good.
Not sure how long the would last in p7 but longer than most batteries you get here.
There is a good deal going on them at the moment.
