So me and my oh are considering Monte Carlo for four nights in June. Is it the kinda place for a sun holiday, drive to Nice and Italy etc, or is it out of the question? Also, is eating and drinking as expensive as they say......Discuss!

I wouldn't stay in Monaco. Its fine to visit for a day, there's just about enough to see/do in that time.

I you don't want to stay in Nice, try Villefranche or Beaulieu-sur-mer. Beautiful coastal towns between Nice and Monaco with easy access to rail and the autoroute.

If you drive across the border to Italy take the old D124 road from the town of Menton rather than the autoroute. Its a lot slower but the views are fabulous. The autoroute is in and out of tunnels and you only catch glimpses of the surrounding beauty from it.

Monaco itself is overhyped and overpriced and only worth visiting to say you've been there. Anything more than an hour in the place is enough unless you have the cash to blow in the casinos.

Agree, with Lapin, the coast road into Italy is much more scenic (well, til you hit Ventemiglia anyway). First stop once you cross the border just after Menton is a little village called Latte which has two supermarkets where you can stock up on cheap alcohol and tobacco, if that's your thing. The drive along from Nice is incredible, but there are some beautiful drives in the hills above the coast road too.

However, if you're looking to go towards Milan, then you're as well to hit the Autoroute asap. From Nice you can do Milan as a day trip, you need to start out early, but you'll get a few hours in Milan.

If you do get time you can take a drive along to Positano in Italy, and amazing little town which takes you back in time.

Forget about Monaco - a slum for the rich. Nothing but high rise apartments and fancy yachts.

As said above...forget heading back to France and instead head for Italy. We stayed outside diano Marino...please drive on past and visit alassio...beautiful town.

Beautiful scenery on that stretch of road.
