Iran are voting today to ban all oil exports to Europe for 5 to 15 years with the ban to come in this week if approved today. (Vote has now been postponed slightly) Story Here: http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/01/29/iran-oil-price-idUSL5E8CT06V20120129

Masterstroke by Iran, puts the ball firmly back in their court by cutting Europe's 6mt window to build up reserves.

Should be interesting to see how this plays put, could mean higher oil prices for us this week, could kick start world war 3.

Ireland approved these sanctions against Iran through our Foreign Minister Eamon Gilmore (Link) , it says all European members states agreed to the sanctions. Should Eamon not have to seek our approval before he gets into supporting war mongering with other EU states and Team America

Gilmore's action has now backfired, we should have been in a position to deal on our own terms with Iran for Oil or any other trade we want to do with them, how do you see this playing out?

Can't believe Eamon and Enda have walked us into the possibility of €150 for barrel of Oil and a Proxy War with Iran.

Maybe if you gave him your phone number he could ring to check your approval in future.

I don't care if Iran continue their nuclear ambitions whatever they may be. I think they want them as protection against America invading them on a whim.

We in Europe will suffer more with the higher oil prices than america with the embargos.

This was such an idiotic move on the EU's part. It will just ensure that the Euro area can't begin to recover for another few years.

Well, if we don't want to buy Iran's oil, then they have as much right to not sell it to us. So I can't really blame them, as it make perfect sense to do stop selling right away.

Very foolish EU decision. Our economies are in a bad state, and this will just make things worse.

In believe it is an ill-considered move on the part of the EU, but suppose Enda didn't have much choice but to go along. He's far too insignificant a tail to wag that dog.;)

The double standards in the EU are breath-taking. On the one hand, Israel - which I see as a second coming of nazism - laughs in the face of the world community, flouts international law and has illegally planted more than half a million settlers, mainly from Russia, on Palestinian land, at the same time as it is draining and destroying the vast aquifer that lies beneath Palestine. In addition, the Israeli nuclear arsenal is now about 300 warheads and growing. Does anyone think the Israelis, who gave us the massacres that killed thousands of refugees in Sabra and Shatila, and who have used poison gas against targets in Lebanon, are too nice to use them?

The West Bank and Gaza have been turned into 21st-century versions of the Warsaw Ghetto, and yet Israel continues to enjoy all kinds of trade concessions and privileges from the EU. Small wonder that Iran feels it needs an effective deterrent when it sees such a rogue state being treated so favourably, but is itself condemned at every turn for seeking the same rights as other sovereign nations?

India has already made it clear that it will continue to buy oil from Iran, because it respects only UN sanctions. the USA has been trying to place obstacles in the way of India paying Iran through international banks, but I'm sure the Indians will find a way round this, too, perhaps paying in gold. India has become too big and strong to be bullied by anyone.

It will be difficult for Iran as well, but that country has gone through some very tough times in the recent past and will cope this time as well. Outside pressure will only tighten the ranks of this patriotic people.;)

The ultimate losers will be European countries as India and China avail themselves of the opportunities to supply the goods the Iranians are no longer buying from EU countries.

It has been prosponed for a few days, while they fine tune the details.

Enda's gaff was a smokescreen, Gilmore jetting off to Team Europe's HQ to give Ireland's approval for sanctions Sunday evening was the real story.

given that the price of oil will continue to rise and iran have plenty of markets that will buy, surely what was a stupid ass licking, pointless gesture by the e.u is already backfiring on them

I thought we wouldn't be getting into things like this by joining the EU. We (The Irish) have more or less given a green light to military action against Iran. Any such action by our state should have to go the people or at least have widespread national will for any such action.

When did a minister get the power to make a decision like this on "our" behalf?

The EU accounted for 25 percent of Iranian crude oil sales its second biggest customer -What will Iran do with its oil sales formerly meant for the EU, Redirecting storage and tankers is a hard enough logistical task, While china,India will buy some of Iran's surplus they wont cut of there already supplies from other countries in the region,They will not buy anymore than they need unless Iran drops its price by a lot, which would effect there already crumbling economy The chinese foreign minister On a trip to the oil-rich states of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Qatar earlier this month also signed energy deals there -- Iran's arch-rival in the region. Saudi Arabia, Libya and others will feel the gap for the EU also the US may help from there reserves.Personally one can only hope today's visit from the IAEA will come to some positive conclusions.

If they strike a deal to sell to India and China do they really need to sell to anyone else? The have 1/3 of the worlds population.
