I don't quite know about the 2001 model, however the facelift version 2002-04 came in two versions: a 102HP and a 115HP Sport version.

The 115HP turbo is the one you want. Can be remapped for an extra 25HP.
Great car in my opinion, only issue in 4+ years has been the EGR valve - but thats a common problem with diesels.

Would try to get one under 100K miles though, that way you know you have at least another 100K.

Also, the one you're looking at, you want to be sure the timing belt has been done recently. And look for proof of this. If it hasn't been done then expect to fork out €650-800+ depending on where you are

The engines are Renault 1.9 engines although supposedly upgraded/reinforced by Volvo.

There are some nice axamples on autotrader uk, although not sure what your budget is.

Would not hestitate to buy another although as mentioned i would be looking for something under 100K, but a even up to 120K should be fine.

1.9 diesel is an old Renault unit. They revised this engine with common rail injectors and 115bhp in late 2001 with a mild facelift. That S40 and the Mitsubishi Carisma share alot of parts and were built in the same factory in the Netherlands.

Make sure all the electrics work, they were patchy on those models and not cheap to fix.
