    Hi
Just bought a 1994 pajero 2.8 fairly good condition and well looked after engine wise.
I am generally happy with it and it was DOE'd just before I bought it.
My questions is that it appears very smokey at start up and if I accelerate hard.
The smoke is very black and will leave a mark on the ground if not moving.
I have read about problems with the EGR and might try blocking it.
Am I being a bit picky and are the generally smokey or what should I check.
I suppose injectors are a suspect also.
Does the DOE check for emmissions and smokeyness?
    Any help appreciated.

Try blanking the EGR,thats a usual suspect for smokiness

You could also try driving the bag out of it for 15 minutes just to clear out the exhaust system. Mine gives a puff of black smoke whenever i floor it,even with the egr blanked,it's pretty normal for diesels.

    Hope this helps

DOE will check for smoke opacity, it's done with engine hot and revving it's nuts off.

I reckon 1994 will be pre EGR and other such stupidity. Black smoke is unburnt diesel, first off do the simple stuff, change the air and fuel filters and see if it makes a difference, then try some injector cleaner.

If it's still smoky then you probably need to get the injectors checked at a diesel specialist. What mileage is on it?

The older Pajero is well known for being smokey during the DoE test. One of the few vehicles that is likely to fail TBH.

Known for it. They do have an EGR but unlike newer vehicles it can be removed and blanked off without the ecu throwing a sulk and going into limp mode. Blanking kits are available on ebay. More power and less smoke.

They recirculate exhaust gas back into the intake manifold under certain load conditions to reduce NOX emissions; or at least that's what they are suppossed to do

What happens is they get gummed up and depending on the design can stick open or get crap built up which obstructs the air flow. On Td5 Land Rovers even when working and clean they affect the free flow and the crap can also affect one of the sensors.

You can see why they are often removed or bypassed.

Its the same as taking a shovel full of ashes from the grate of your fire and fcuking it back in on top of the nicely burning coals.

Makes about as much sense and works just as well

i believe one of the main reasons for those pajeros being smokey is the fuel delivery valve settings on the pump its very common on pajeros

There's a thimble filter beneath the banjo bolt in the injector pump.black smoke but also loss of power if it's dirty.relativly simple job to do
