turning off the boiler switch

we have a gas boiler with 4 switches, one for turning it on and one for the water, upstairs and downstairs heating. i always turn off the on/off switch when its not in use but a friend of mine mentioned to me that i shouldn't do this as its not good for the boiler. just wondering if theres any truth to this???

one other thing that i'm unsure of is the watertank upstairs, we have a sink/bath switch for the immersion next to the tank. if we need hot water is it more efficient to use the gas or immersion for this?? would we get enough water for a shower using just the sink switch??

    thanks!

When you mean on/off switch for the boiler do you mean the one on the wall?
Also what make and model of boiler is it?

Most modern boilers have a frost stat inside them an the main isolator must not be turned off because you will be deactivating this function. Some also have an anti seize function for the pump and likewise it should not be turned off.

You will have to be a bit more specific about the on/off switch.

its a heat line s20s boiler johnniek. and the on/off switch is on the wall beside it, i'm assuming its like a pilot light??

It sounds like the switched fused spur for the boiler. This should not be turned off.
