I think this is possibly the fastest time by an Irish runner since Alistair Cragg's 3:55.04 in 2006. Super run by McCarthy.

    7. John Coghlan 3:59.3mins(2012)

    Is that the indoor list?

Ray Flynn has 3:51.20, Frank O'Mara has 3:52.30, and Mark Carroll has 3:54.5.

Is that the first instance of a father and son running under 4 minutes?

Are you going off this list Dan? http://www.athleticsireland.ie/content/wp-content/uploads/2006/05/mens-stats-dec-15.pdf

I'd be almost certain Ray Flynn and Mark Carroll went quicker than 3.55 too

That is pretty incredible that, indoors, Ireland has 4 of the top 10 milers (3 of the top 6!!)

There's a list of 43 sub 4 minute milers available on athenryac.com which includes Ronnie Delaney with 3:57.50 (06/08/1958) and Paul Donovan from Galway wiith 3:55.84 (03/07/1984).

These records are 30+ years old, any record that can last 30 years is truly epic.

Has the 1,500m not replaced the mile?

The 1,500m race was around 30 years ago too.

Mile is still run quite a bit in the US (particularly indoors) but obvioulsy not in championships

More what I meant was that most of todays milers would run 1,500 for championship events - so 1,500 is the priority.
The Mile is not run as much at big races where fast times are usually expected.

Running a fast mile won't qualify you for the Olympics etc (open to correction)

Of course it won't but anyone who comes close to breaking a mile record will have no problems qualifying for any major event.

The Dream Mile is still raced in Oslo every year.

Time would roughly equate to about 3.37-3.38 which is roughly on the cusp of the B standard for the 1500m for London however given that its indoor and a season opener for Dave Mac i reckon he should be there or there abouts come the summer to make it

Are you sure? When Alan Webb wanted to break the American mile record two years ago, he had to go to an obscure meeting in Belgium because he could not find a suitable one in the states.

Sorry, I thought he meant records (as in World or Irish national record), as opposed to PBs or even the 4 minute barrier.

    My fault
