    Hi all,

I have a 17m run from my Sky HD box to my tv. I was thinking of getting this cable http://www.tvtrade.ie/hdmi-to-hdmi-cable-20m.html Has anyone used this cable or something similar? What would signal quality be like over this distance? Any replies very much appreciated.

The signal will be degraded in any 20m cable. Whether it matters depends on your equipment. The fact that this cable is said to be "3D compatible" worries me. 3D signals are no different from 2D so it's a meaningless statement. Pure marketing hype along the lines of "digital aerial" and (yes, I've seen it!) "Digital rechargeable batteries".

There's a good explanation of HDMI cables here:

    Liameter,
Are you sure you are correct. The first time I heare this I did not believe it either, however, Version 1.4 apparently does cater for some new aspects quote....
so the HDMI 1.4 specification establishes protocols for a number of popular 3D display methods, including:

Frame, line, or field alternative methods
Side by side methods (full and half)
    2D plus depth methods

I'm not sure if the older versions also handle the above. I know Version 1.4 also handles ARC which can be handy.
By someone saying it is 3D compatable is probably their way of saying it is version 1.4.
    Regards,
    Last.

It would be worth clicking on the link I provided and emailing that company with the question. As far as I can see, Version 1.x is merely a design protocol. It doesn't guarantee that a cable of a specific length will deliver a watchable picture to any HDMI TV from any HDMI source.

Sky HD throgh a 20m HDMI cable probably won't work, Sky HDMI output seem very fickle and refuse to work over long distance.
I would go for HD over CAT 6 extender for any distance over a few metres.

As excollier says go for Sky over the Cat 5 or 6 cables and you'll be sorted. I have around a 30 metre run of two cat5 cables feeding Sky from the living room to the 2nd room. No loss of quality and with the magic eye via coax it works no different than if sky the box was straight connected.
