I'm finding it tough to choose a car as i don't know whats reliable so i need help please.
I'm going to be driving around 800kms a week so i'm looking at a diesel and i have around 7k to spend maybe stretch to 8k. I was thinking of an 08 onwards car because of the tax but and any advice is very much appreciated. Thanks.

I was looking at this even though i'm a man :D ..http://www.carzone.ie/search/Nissan/Tiida/Dsl-Full/201204206718431/advert?channel=CARS as all i've been reading about it that's it's a womans car!
I'm not too bothered about the look of the car but i do have standards :) and i'd drive the Tilda.

If I was driving 800km a week, I would loose the will to live if it was in a Tiida.

    Get higher standards. :)

I cannot see you getting a 08 diesel for 8k OP but for god sakes get something other than that yoke.

Toyota Corolla or Ford Mondae, though i also dont think that you would get an 08 one for 8K

Ill get the ball rolling so. The vrt should be handy enough and the DMF is done.

I'd be willing to get a car taxed and insured for the 8k if it wasn't a 08.

OP, forget about buying something on your budget because it has cheap tax. You are just sacrificing quality and comfort for the sake of a few hundred euro in motor tax every year.

There is better value in pre 2008 cars because the Irish mindset is that it is not considered if the motor tax is over €160 a year.

Tbh, if the car doesn't bother you there's value in Tiidas. I wouldn't pay anywhere approaching asking but for a tool to do a job it will do what you want. Spec isn't bad, they are comfy enough and if it's got a good service history coupled with a dealer warranty I could think of worse things to spend money on.

    Yeah that's very good point.
As i said i'd take a very good reliable car that's cheap to run if i could buy it and insure/tax for under the 8k.

Thanks for all the recommendations so far btw.

id either stretch for a 1.6tdi golf or jetta thats just for the sake off saving a couple a euros a year or keep half your budget and get a mk4 golf bora or passat a mint 02 03 or 04 for 3 or 4k solid car very reliable economical and powerfull

Seems the sensible route to go down is an older reliable car which i'd be willing to do.

OP something like a Volvo S40 would be my choice from maybe 2006-2007. You could get something like the 1.6D which would have low enough tax on the old system anyway. Plenty of them are around on carzone..

it depends what size car you want. I drove a 07 focus 1.6 diesel for a cople of years and found it really good all round, economical, very good handling.

If you wanted something bigger then you wont do much better than a mondeo diesel - a great car for all road types, comfortable and economical too. Dont let the tax put you off, spread over the year it doesnt amount to much considering you will be doing above average miles.

The fords are cheaper than their german rivals but are really up there for quality and performance plus they're very reliable. Depending on where you intend to purchase, uk models will have higher spec and comforts which may be important if you spend lots of time behind the wheel

Also consider mazda 6. The website below is useful for reviews.

Woman's car? Jesus, what kind of women do you know? Its a third world budget special sold here because of the historical popularity of the almera here and lack of a direct replacement, particularly the saloon. The only person I've ever known who expresses an interest in one of those was my octogenarian father in law who wanted to replace his 07 almera with one, daysul for the cheap tax and all. I convinced him to keep his almera or if he really needed the cheap tax  get an Octavia 1.6tdi, but he decided against the Octavia on account of it being a hatch and he really wanted a saloon so kept the almera.

What's the verdict on this? http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2915523

A bit overpriced but the mileage looks low. I would be putting the reg through Motorcheck first to make sure its genuine.

Hi all, I'm looking to buy a 08 kia Sportage. And I'm just wondering would a 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive be better on diesel? Heard they are good on diesel
