8 jetta 1.6 reliable car ???

    (2008 model jetta )As above buying one of these and would like to know what people think reliability wise ??

    The 8v 1.6 is a pretty old school but rock solid engine if looked after. I had it in a car and over 140k km it never used a drop of oil. It was pleasant enough in use but the economy was more akin to a 2 litre.

    The gearbox can be a weakpoint, bearings tend to go. Leave out the clutch in neutral and if you hear a slight chattering walk away. Also the timing belts are 4 years/90k km, whichever comes first.

    The Jetta seems to give less trouble than the Golf on which it is based on. Must be something to do with the fact that the Jetta is built in South Africa.

    No, it was a a Seat Leon with the same drivetrain.
