What Id like to know is what video did they watch to convince them to pay 35m for Carroll

Yes, wealthy and astute business men buy a player because he can kick a football into a bin.

How simple do you have to be to believe this?

Sometimes i really cringe at some of the idiotic posts in this place. Not you stumpy, just incase i'm lumped in with that non-martian.

    Edit. There ya go.

I wouldnt have believed it if they weren't the same owners that sanctioned a 35m purchase for Andy Carroll, I don't think this was very astute, do you?

I didn't realise name calling was allowed, in fact I believe its not or are there different rules for moderators?

Comolli and Dalglish will have to take the blame for that one.

The only player I'm aware of that was signed because of a video was Bebe. Now that was retarded.

Apologies i genuinely thought you were from Mars. If you can confirm this i'll edit my terrible slur on your good name.

Now the next part of that (one of your better ones too) post.

Yes i am a moderator. I moderate a forum called Alt/Indie (you wouldn't like it) and Gigs/Events (again you'd hate it) if you look below my name, both forums are listed there. Now here's the tricky part to understand. This is the soccer forum, where i, am not a moderator. I'll go over that part once more. I do not moderate the soccer forum.

So with that in mind, no there are not different rules for moderators.

Any questions feel free to pm me.

It emerged today?? This has been doing the rounds for months. That quote from Tom Werner was from a interview done for LFC TV months ago!

Just because I asked you where there different rules for moderators doesn't mean I assumed you were a soccer mod, in fact what I did mean was because you are a moderator of some form perhaps you were part of a club thats above the law of non mod posters, Im not actually saying this is the case mind you hence why I asked the question in the first place, and no to answer your question , I am not from Mars

I assumed you thought i was a soccer forum moderator as this is the soccer forum and you asked because i was above the rules. I'm not. As i explained it was a simple misunderstanding and i edited my post to reflect that.

Also as your threads go, this one has got to be right up there. Top 3?

This is hilarious because I remember where this quote is from...it was an interview by Ian Ayre with Tom Werner. This taken out of context completely. He knew the video was fake!! Im gonna try dig out that interview.

Being called a martian isn't personal abuse, unless he is from Venus and meant it in an argumentative way and not a friendly way which he would be used to, being from Venus and all...

Within 5 posts the LFC owners have recieved condemnation for both taking too much interest ie. looking up videos of the coaches targets, and also not going over the head of the coaches to veto the Carroll move.

    Exceedingly moronic.

Ok im in work and I know this was an exclusive thing for LFCTV but there might be a copy of it posted somewhere...I'll try find it when i get home.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 404 ✭✭seanwhite20

Ok here's exactly what was said. You won't be able to watch the vid of it though because it's exclusive to LFCTV members.....

TW: I do have a funny story to tell you! When we first were talking about Stewart Downing, we looked on the internet to see what we could learn about him. And there was some footage of Stewart that maybe you can show our fans, where he is, from 30 yards away, kicking a football into five different trash cans and it's brilliant.
John and I said, 'Oh my god, this player is brilliant, we've got figure out a way to make a deal with him.' We later found out of course that the footage was somewhat doctored but we were so excited about Downing joining Liverpool.

Here's a link it has the full transcript from the interview...

I never understand why people think the pool paid 35 mill for carroll. The torres deal was andy carroll plus 15 million so in reality Chelsea paid for 2 duds in Torres and Carroll.

I was reading a blog by Hansen today on the BBC website and I'd like some of whatever he's smoking.

So the transfer Market has gone back to the trading system of old? If you give us Torres we will give you 15 million and a horse?

I am just after waking up the rest of the house laughing at the stupidity.

I believe there is actually some substance to it but that doesn't come near to justifying the fee Liverpool paid for Carroll.

Whatever the reasons Liverpool paid 35 mill they grossly overpaid so it doesn't matter what way it's worded IMO.

It might be time to move on

Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has described reports that the club signed Stewart Downing on the basis of a YouTube video as 'ridiculous'.

Stories this week emerged that Werner and the club's principal owner, John W Henry, decided last summer to push through an eventual £20million deal for the former Aston Villa winger after seeing clips on the internet.

The Liverpool hierarchy were said to have been dazzled by a doctored video featuring Downing slotting balls into five wheelie bins from long range, and quotes from Werner, from a dated interview with Liverpool's television channel, were used to support the story.

But Werner on Sunday dismissed the suggestion and was disappointed key details were left out of the original report.

"Someone told me about this," the American told Liverpool's official website. "It's a great story, but unfortunately for the person who wrote the piece, it isn't true.

"It actually comes from an interview I did five months ago with (Liverpool managing director) Ian Ayrefor our club TV channel in which I said that when we first talked about signing Stewart, we'd found a video of him kicking footballs into some trash cans.

"I explained in that interview back in August we knew the footage had been doctored, but I guess that detail doesn't really help stand up the story.

"The amount of people involved and the work that goes into a signing a player is huge so the suggestion that we'd buy someone on the back of one doctored video is ridiculous."

Stewart Downing wasn't, won't and never will be anything approaching world class. he's like in the 5th tier of footballers at best.

suppose it depends if you believe the liverpool chairman or not seeing as he claimed it 4 days after the deal was completed
    John Henry wrote:
The fee for Torres was dependent on what Newcastle asked for Carroll,” Henry told The Guardian, explaining they simply wanted a difference of £15m.

“The negotiation for us was simply the difference in prices paid by Chelsea and to Newcastle. Those prices could have been £35m [from Chelsea for Torres] and £20m [to Newcastle for Carroll], 40 and 25 or 50 and 35. It was ultimately up to Newcastle how much this was all going to cost. They [Newcastle] made a hell of a deal. We felt the same way
