Just wondering if anyone knew the quickest way to travel from Laois to Sligo and back by public transport?

Thinking of going there for college in September, but it's really awkward to get to!

You're probably going to have to go via Dublin. The bus and train take similar amounts of time (over five hours), except the bus is much cheaper. About €20 single or €30 return (student prices). The train student return is just under €50, although if you book online (and as separate journeys, Portlaoise to Dublin and Dublin to Sligo) you could do it for €44.

You can get the bus via Athlone and Longford in about the same amount of time but the buses to and from Dublin are usually newer and much more comfortable. I don't think there are private companies running Dublin Sligo but I might be wrong. The lack of through tickets from Portlaoise to Sligo on private operators would make doing it that way much more expensive, in all likelihood. You would have to buy separate tickets, which would obviously add up.

A new bus company started between Sligo and Dublin offering 10 euro fares and a journey time of 2 hours and 40 mins(Stops at Mullingar,Longford, and Carrick only)As previous poster said going via Mullingar or Athlone is your best bet there both only a hour and a half from Sligo.Although if you go via Dublin you have more choices but it seems awful indirect to me and needlessly long
