Cork City Hurling

Was just reading something the other day about hurling clubs in Cork City and was a but surprised. The big 3 i.e, Blackrock, St. Finbarrs and Glen Rovers between them have only won 2 County championships since 2000 and Blackrock won them both. In that same time the only other city team to win the championship have been Na Piarsaigh in 2004, since then the only other city team to make the county final was The Glen in 2010, Blackrock also lost the 2003 final. Blackrock won there last title in 2002, The Barrs in in 1993 and they haven't even made a final since then!, The Glen's last title came in 1989 and have only made the final 2 times since in 1991 and 2010.

When you consider some of the biggest names to ever play the game have come from Cork City more over from the big 3 clubs the likes of Jimmy Barry-Murphy, Gerald McCarthy, Christy Ring, Jack Lynch, Ray Cummins to name a few, is there any reason for the lack of success for the city teams?

Well, the fall of the city teams dominance was mirrored by the rise of the county teams, particularly East Cork. Newtownshandrum would be the obvious non East Cork team to make the break though. Some of the biggest names in Cork hurling still come from city teams though - O'Halpín, Ronan Curran etc but mostly from East Cork. In ten years time it will probably swing back towards the city again. Swings and roundabouts really - surprised you thought it needed a thread to be honest - there is a Cork thread.

I don't think the good folk of Cloyne would be too happy to hear you saying Christy Ring came from the City.:)
