EDTs and Lessons afterwards?

I've been looking around a lot of places and they all seem to say that after your EDTs you will need additional lessons. Is this just pushing for more business? I've looked at the syllabus and a lot looks like basic stuff. So I don't want to pay for EDTs and then have to pay for regular lessons all over again after that.

Also, is the sponsor part required? Some of the places I was inquiring to were saying that in a pinch, the instructor can be your sponsor on the EDT logbook. So I'm pretty confused as to the mixed messages.

I know that if I ask for recommendations on a place it must be PM'd. But If it is a case of I need to pay a driving school business for my EDTs rather than filling out the log book with a sponsor without paying someone for the lessons, what is the cheapest and most painless way to get my EDTs out of the way. I would much prefer to learn how to drive practically by actually driving with an instructor as to a syllabus making me practice on my own time with a sponsor.

Apologies if any of my facts are wrong, I'm just very confused with being told different things by different companies and the RSA.
    Thank you.

Essential Driver Training (EDT) is a syllabus of 12 lessons which must be given by an RSA Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). Only an ADI can provide a learner driver with the required logbook and then subsequently stamp to say the individual 12 EDT lessons have been delivered.

The RSA recommend the learner driver has a sponsor (mum, dad, auntie, uncle etc etc someone who has held a full licence for at least 2 years) who helps the pupil practice the skills taught during each EDT lesson. The sponsor should not receive payment for this unless the ADI takes the role of the sponsor. This may happen if the learner cannot get insured on an alternative car or doesn't have anyone who can practice with for example.

After most of the earlier EDT lessons the RSA recommend that the learner should practice the skills taught in the previous EDT lesson for around 3 hours prior to moving onto the next EDT lesson. As explained above these practice sessions can be done with the help of the sponsor and/or the ADI.

The sponsor is not required ultimately but how else are you to practice the skills taught during the EDT lessons legally if you practice alone or without an ADI or family member/friend?

The system does have flaws but it's what we have to abide by just now.

Here's the EDT Info Booklet for your info:

The EDT is basic skills of driving, but if you want to get your full licence it is a requirement under Irish Law, as for extra lessons after there is a possibility you may need extra lesson's depending on your ability, how much pratice you get, how much work you put into it, etc.

and while you say you dont want to pay for extra lesson's and i can see where people are coming from in todays tough times, it may work out cheaper if you are able to get your test first time remembering that the test is €85 a pop.

just some food for taught, hope that helps, if you need any further advice pm me.

Must take the EDT lessons with an instructor.
Should do the practice with a sponsor.
Should take more lessons (But usually just when your test is due).
