Hi ,looking for a bit of advice .Im thinking of buying a new suit as I have a few weddings coming up .Im going to New york in 2 weeks ,would there be better value to be got there compared to here?

Any advice on the type of suit to buy?I have always just gone for a black suit but wouldnt mind getting something different,I would only be wearing a suit very rarely.

Anyone recommend good shops to look ?

I'd definitely reccomend waiting until New York!

If I were you, I'd wait until New York, and get the bus from Port Authority out to Jersey Gardens (http://www.jerseygardens.com/). Friends of mine live over there and he got a Hugo Boss amazing suit for about $200. In comparison to here that is incredible.

Out in JG you have the big retailers selling their stuff much more cheaply- serious bargains.

I'd recommend a navy or grey suit. More versatile than black, and both wedding and work appropriate, which is great if you don't wear them too often, it means you will always be able to wear it to whatever function you need. You know? Brown shoes for both of them, too. :)

Well have a look on stlye blogs like fashiobeans and gq for suits, and you can have a look for styles you like- 3 piece, slim, 2 button, double breasted... See what you like, it'll help if you have an idea before you go.

Depends on what you define as "better value". If you're looking for an off the rack suit just buy it in the knowledge that you're either going to have to have it altered to fit you or go around in an improperly fitted suit.

    Alterations are fairly expensive.

If you've no experience with suits just buy a navy or grey, two button, single breasted suit.

Some things to look out for:
    - It's not a work outfit, so make sure it fits you properly and complements your body. If you're in doubt over the fit, do not buy the suit.
    - With regards to the jacket, make sure that the end of the shoulders align with the end of your own shoulders and aren't sagging over the end or are too high. Make sure you don't buy a jacket with highly padded shoulders as they don't look right. When wearing a jacket, you only ever button the top button (of a 2 button jacket) or the middle button of a 3 button jacket so when trying it on, button it accordingly. What you're looking for is that it comes in at your waist accordingly and accentuates the V made by your shoulders to your waist. If it's loose around the waist and you're not altering it, don't buy it.

Make sure the jacket isn't too short or too long. Long jackets look sloppy and short jackets are effeminate.

Regarding the sleeves, they should be long enough that they stop near your wrist and that when you're wearing a shirt, about 1/4 of an inch of the shirts cuff should protrude from the button of the jacket sleeve. Make sure it's not too baggy or too tight.

-With regards to the pants, make sure these fit you properly. Some guys try to wear baggy pants to cover up their legs (both heavy guys and skinny guys). They shouldn't be tight on your legs but they should absolutely not have a lot of material flowing about in the wind. Make sure they fall to your ankles properly and are neither too long, that they bunch up around the ankle or fall under the back of your shoe, or too short that socks are showing.

Buy yourself a nice pair of shoes to go with them and some accessories - a made to measure french/double cuff shirt (it'll be less than $100) and some nice cufflinks.

    Best of luck with it.

Woodbury Common is another good place like jersey gardens if you're waiting until NY

I wouldn't go navy if at all possible. Gray can be a great option.

Is there anywhere closer to home that is good for suits? I have to buy a few for work - 3 or 4 maybe.

Can anyone recommend a tailor in Dublin to do all the tailoring for an off the rack suit?

    Thanks!

Why would you be against Navy?
What shade of Gray would be best ,light or Dark?
