I may be late posting this, but was faffing about on the AppStore and came across a free HUD app for the iPhone.

Basically, it seems to give you your highest speed, current speed, time, and a compass.

Just tried it out on the way home, and appears to work. And it's free.

Being a gadget freak, I'm loving it.

Just thought I'd pass it on.

Had one for my Android. Cool idea etc but drains the battery something serious as the GPS is on full time and a charger isn't practical as the phone has to be at the back of the dash.

True. Was searching for a dash cam app, and just stuck in Dashboard. I think it's called Awesome HUD or something.

Very true. Might try it on the binnacle, with an anti slip may or something.

Looking at it now, looks good. There's a version for €2.39 too, seems to be just more themes available, but you can buy themes individually for €0.79

Seems to be the case alright. Didn't bother with any of that craic. You can change the colours of the display to suit dash lights in the free version.

I got a Kensington one in D.I.D. a while ago. Think it was €20. But you could either windscreen mount it, or use the dashboard disk that came with it.

I've the dashboard disk stuck in the little storage box above the radio in the Octavia, and it works perfectly. It can also be rotated so you can use it in landscape mode.

I'd need that for the APP

This app? confused about how you'd manage that tbh... or an actual GPS app?

It only seems to show up in landscape view on mine so a rotating holder will be needed to gain any real benefit from it

The two sat nav apps I've tried have been either landscape or portrait.

I still can't figure out of you're on about this HUD app or not :D

If you are, why not just use one of those non-slip things?

    :o

I'm IN BEER. The APP only shows up on the phone screen in the landscape view even if I rotate it.

To see it while driving I'd need something which can hold the phone on it's side so I can view it

The idea of a heads up display is that it appears on the windscreen though, so you're not looking out of your line of sight for the info!

    car-hud-navigation.jpg

If you go into the app, press the thing that looks like two leaves in a circle, then click the middle button it'll rotate the HUD so when it's reflected, it'll be readable. If you want to test it, hold it up to a black screen / reflective surface and you'll see what I mean ;)

Completely defeats the purpose of a HUD if you're gawking at the phone screen all the time :pac:

Theres a good one on Android called Car HUD

It lets you pick the colour and just shows your speed in a large "7 segment" style font. it works really well at night especially if you have an OLED screen like most of the samsung phones as there is no backlight and the intense colour is projected brightly onto the windscreen.

The only annoying problem is you get two slightly offset images because of the thickness of the windscreen

That looks well. Just spotted that option. I'll see how the normal view goes and might pay for it

Yeah, you need to install curtains in the car though.

Anything by brodit. They usually do three mounts for every type of car, vent and two centre console. You can also change the holder depending on your phone.

I think it's called Awesome HUD. If that doesn't bring it up, just put "Dashboard" in the search box, and it should be there.

Initially looked it up on my iPad but nothing came up, checked it on my iPhone and it came up

Probably figured iPhone users would have no need for it going round on their fixies ;)
