Hi,

I need to order a new PC tonight

I was going to order Office Home & Student but it does not have MS Outlook. How will I be able to send & reciece emails if this is not on the laptop? I have a eircom.net address, I know I can log onto eircom, but the interface is terrible.

Can anyone else suggest an alternative or do I have to fork out €100 extra just to get Outlook?

Any advice would be great as this is theonly thing stopping my from placing the order.

Cheers

You could try this. It's free & every bit as good as Outlook IMO.

+1 to Thunderbird

Another thing you could do is link your eircom account to a gmail one. That way you could access your emails anywhere, without the need for a client.

Thanks for that, I'm downloading thunderbird now to see what it's like.

Regarding linking my eircom account to my gmail one - can you offer any tips on how to do that ??

Cheers

I'd also reccomend getting your Eircom mails through Gmail, it will also filter the Eircom spam mails very effectively :)

You'll need a college email address.

Windows Live Mail, which is free, will also do what you want.

Been a year or two since I registered, but I just had to put in the student name and their school/university, (selected from a list)

No college email required ...as paulgalway says I just had to fill in my sons name and select his school.

OK - loaded up Thunderbird & put in my password. It asked me did I want to transfer my contacts which I said yes to, but it didn't seem to send or recieve. Decided I didn't know what I was doing & I'd wait until I could get someone else to do it. I have now deleted Thunderbird.

Just realised my regular outlook/eircom is not working. It will not allow me to send (still recieving). I am getting the following message:
Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.
Subject: testing Tues
Sent: 1/31/2012 10:28 AM
The following recipient(s) could not be reached:
'xxxxxxxxx@eircom.net' on 1/31/2012 10:28 AM
None of your e-mail accounts could send to this recipient.

I tried to do a restore but it is not allowing me to go back pass last week went I loaded up Thunderbird (I deleted about 1500 emails & 200 photos - would that might have something to do with it?).

I haven't a clue how to get my email up & running again - any advice?

(I shouldn't be let near a PC!!!)

Microsoft replaced it with Windows Live Mail, which is part of the Windows Live Essential pack. It's a separate download.

Brilliant. An OS without a bundled mail client. :)

In fairness to Microsoft Live Mail is free, although they don't include it by default as they've been sued in the past for "monopolising" markets by only including windows Media player, Outlook Express, IE etc.
Funnily enough apple do the same thing and nothing ever happened them though?

Thanks for all the help - it appears UPC suspended my account & just happened to coincide with me messing about !! So my email on the old laptop is sorted.

In relation to the option put forward:

Thunderbird flashed up a message to say the eircom does not use encryption & this could lead to security issues - does anyone know if I should be worried?

Syncing Eircom & Gmail - does this not mean I will get all my eircom emails onto my phone (give the amount of rubbish I get, I'm not too keen on this). Is there a way I can limit it to my PC?

New laptop should be here today - excited, hope I don;t botch it all up !!

Gmail filters out most of the spam - that's the big advantage of it, so you should see little or none of the 'rubbish'. Just check the Spam folder every now and again in case something you want slips through.
