I am trying to book a train ticket on line but can't book a return ticket. I phoned and they said I need to have to latest browser. However, in order to download the latest browser I need to update my operating system which I don't want to do right now. Is there any way around it? I use a Mac.

    Hi Mood,

I'll move this to the Mac forum for you where hopefully someone can give a suggestion. You could try using the latest firefox, Opera, Chrome etc browsers in the mean time,

    Good luck

    Nick

Yes, in Safari if you go to to menu and go to "develop" then go to the second option "user agent" and then in there select IE 8 or 9.

That should do it, they usually want IE the other browsers user agents may work but IE should definitely work.

Just remember to change it back when you are done.

Can't find 'develop' under any drop down menu!

Click "Safari" at the top left. The Click "Preferences > Advanced" then tick "Show Developer menu in menu bar". Once done follow Conors instructions. :)

That's a shambolic system that CIE have if it's intentionally blocking or breaking certain browsers.

It is common enough on Irish sites.

Ye follow Zeners instructions, I thought develop was there by default but it evidently is not.

    evidently is not.

    Why??

    Why??

They use IE and thats all they know, I don't know how developers actually manage to do this but some do manage to write such bad websites that you have to trick them into thinking you are IE.

This stuff comes up time and time again with Irish-developed websites. Some of them seem to ignore the entire philosophy of building web-sites i.e. make them independent of any specific hardware or software and not dependent on any product to work

Yes but why Ireland? I understand (being a web dev) that IE is the most popular and should take priority, but c'mon it takes ten seconds to get it right

No, IE is simply a product, standards should take priority - case in point. :)

and with Apple on the cusp of being the valuable corporation in the world, I'd venture to suggest that IE is no longer the leader it might once have been.

IE despite being the most popular browser should be the exception when developing sites.

You develop as close to standard html (and whatever) else as you can and then IE usually needs little hacks/tricks to work especially older versions.

Some people manage to get it so wrong so much so that it might even be deliberate that it does not work unless it is IE but then again maybe they just really learned web development the wrong way.

Well then I suppose I just get it wrong then! I have always tested on IE first (despite working on a Mac), got it working perfect there and then moved on to style sheet tweaks and other little tweaks for other browsers

Internet Explorer for Mac hasn't been around since 2003, so you are either running Windoze /IE in emulation mode on the Mac or it's a pretty ancient Mac; unfortunately neither scenario is ideal for standards compliance testing.

Not wrong at all. I just find it easier as most others browsers work if you stick to standards whereas IE needs tweaks to work especially as you go back versions.
