Perhaps some good news for some...

The EU wants Ireland to change the way Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) is applied to some imported cars.

Current VRT rules discriminate against some cars, says EU.

The European Commission has asked Ireland to change the way Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) is applied to imported second-hand cars which are less than three months old.

Oh this would be funny if it was just lower VRT on Renaults and VWs..

This is a joke, sure on that basis, no new car is worth the asking in that it devalues as soon as its registered.

There is VAT on all imported vehicles. The state can't charge VAT at the port unless it is coming from outside the EU.

Cars do devalue as soon as they are registered.

There is no VAT on second hand imports over 6 months/6000km, e.g. most of them brought in. This is what I'm referring to. If they need to change the VRT rules they're going to likely change the VAT ones to recoup losses.

So what's the difference if its 1 day old or 3 months old? It's only lost money if you're selling it.

People importing are doing so to save money. I don't think vrt should be less just cos the car has been registered in the dealers name, driven to the ferry, and to the vrt office.

It would serve them better to query the OMSP on cars rather then the price of new cars.

The irony is that it's the EU that classes <3 month/<3,000km vehicles as new for VAT purposes and not the Irish government. They want their cake and eat it.

Does this only apply to cars that have been sold or to new cars sitting on a lot also?

It applies to all vehicles imported from another EU state. If buying new you can get a form to purchase VAT exempt and only pay it here.

Doesnt the no VAT rule not only apply when VAT has already been paid in another EU country? as with any other product?

Not on "new" vehicles. It's an EU ruling. 2nd hand ones are VAT exempt if they are over 3 months or 3000km

I've heard that there is a big VRT case coming up in the courts shortly - anybody know any thing about it - will it affect VRT on imports? and I heard the EU are involved. Any truth?

I'm not privy to that information as the legal team would have a strategy as to how they are going to approach the case. There is loads wrong with VRT but they'll be going after what is most effective rather than wading through every unfocused banal detail of the unjust system that is VRT. I just know it's on the 6th March.

You can reclaim the UK (for example) VAT if you pay it over here on "new" cars.

I agree, buy your car - but appeal the VRT. Lets us know what it is if and when.
