I have a 2007 skoda superb, grand car and all that! But I like to tune into BBC 5 live on the radio for sports and matches while on the road. Can't seem to get it no matter what I try, Is it possible to tune it in on a car radio in Ireland and if so how? Thanks in advance, used to be able to kinda get it on a Nissan I had years ago.

Is it on 909 and 693 mw? That's where I used to tune it to, haven't done so yet in the new car for some reason.

+1 Unless you're near the border with a DAB radio you won't get it anywhere else. I checked a few weeks ago and 5Live (BBC R5) doesn't seem to broadcast on FM.

i used to get it on mw in Dublin fine alright.

Your best bet is to get a line in to your stereo either through aux input or one of those tape to jack connectors and then listen to it through iPhone, android, Windows phone etc.

You will get it in the evening and night time on 909 or 693 (varies from night to night which is best) almost anywhere in the county, its not great but its good enough to listen to, you sort of get used to listening to the bad reception after a while. I put it on the radio every night in bed in Cork or in Galway when I'm up home, been listening to it for years at night, the background noise is almost soothing at this stage :D

Thanks, I've done that with a degree of sucess but it tends to break down a bit with the weak Internet connection while driving

I used to try and listen to matches while driving. The reception was so bad I actually rang them on an after match phone in ( Spooney, I think ).

Anyway, after making the point that there were a lot of Irish trying to listen through sh1te reception, all I got was " Sorry, mate ".

I still use it if I'm stuck in the car, but it is depressingly bad.

I have an FM transmitter dock plugged into my cig lighter and stream it via my iphone to the car stereo.

If your car radio has MW then tune two adjacent buttons to 693 and 909 KHz and flip flop between them depending on which is better on any particular day. Listening in the daytime the quality is pretty poor but it's talk radio and you soon get used to it.

If you are on the east coast and you want a daytime non fade signal when stationary, try 990khz.:)

What car radio is it? My father had a 99 Golf and the AM reception was rubbish.

    Where are you located?

Thanks for the tip on the 990 option, will store it in my radio tomorrow. However the only transmitter broadcasting R5 on 990 kHz is in in Tywyn, Wales which is roughly opposite Gorey and it's only 1kW so probably only useful for people in Dublin, Wicklow and Wexford. I doubt if the signal can be picked up in Limerick where the OP is based.

From Ireland the MW transmitters in Droitwich (150 kW, 693 kHz) and Moorside Edge (200 kW, 909 kHz) provide the best signals.

Edit: Just tried 990 on the car radio (Dublin southside, good altitude), got R5 ok but it was better on 909 kHz. The 693 frequency was completely swamped by some non-English station.
