As far as I know, it's a new race. At least, that Irish Cycling piece indicates that it is and I don't recall seeing it on the calendar before.

One big 70km loop - that's going to be tough to marshall. It's listed as A1-A4 too.

Is anyone going to this? What about the licences that are not here yet?

There's notice on the club forum about the licences.

Thanks Vlad, I did order mine though separately through the CI website as I was late to pay the club fee. Maybe morana knows if they will be here in time.

Are you driving down for the race?

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,269 Mod ✭✭✭✭Chips Lovell

Well the clubs received them yesterday, so there's a chance you'll get yours in the post before the weekend.

I haven't decided whether I'll start with this race or the one next weekend.

    From the CI website.....

If your licence number is not appearing on your profile within 3 days of the event you should contact the club secretary/event organiser, and establish the status of your application. Cycling Ireland accepts electronic ID and parental/guardian signatures.

You must be able to quote your licence number at the event, or present a print screen of your profile with your licence number to confirm that we have received the fee/ID and all is in order

Good point by Superlav there. Ring the organiser if your licence hasn't arrived. You could be able to sign on with a print out and have them give you a temporary number for the race.

Apologies for the the daft question, do you need a licence to race in this event? I thought you could just turn up on the day and sign up as described below.

"Sign On: in The BELL YARD Pub Dublin Road Monasterevin. Sign On open at 9.30 am for both events."

You need a licence to sign on. If you don't have one, you'll have to buy a day licence first.

    Anyone go?

Yes, A4. Beautiful weather, flat course, no wind. Only a 4-minute handicap, so A3s/A4s pretty much pootled along and enjoyed the view until the express train arrived. Ramped up to nigh on 40kph thereafter, which shelled out groups of five or six every few minutes. The highlight was without doubt the bunch hammering through Stradbally main street like a rocket. I lasted until just before Kildangan, when the right calf cramped and I lost the wheels. The road got very heavy after the Kildangan turnoff, and there was a slight drag up to the Monasterevin/Kildare road. Bar an initial pimple after that, it was a straight flat run back in to the town, so by all accounts it ramped up again with a 5-6 man break playing cat and mouse. Robin from Waterford CC pipped Ryan Sherlock (Cycleways) to the line. For those of an Orwell bent: Dan Whiting got sixth, Gavin Dodd (A4!) 13th.

    There's hope!

    Great result by those lads.

Yeah, went to this myself. Very well organised, very well marshalled, really enjoyed it. Flat course, good wide open roads and a group that was able to behave itself.

I started with the A4 as well, a couple of us trying to get it us going at the start but to no great surprise, everyone else just sat back and wait for the A3 and A1/A2s guys to come along. They really upped the pace, their power just never cease to amaze me. I got boxed in towards the end so I wasn't in a position to put in my usual pitiful effort I like to call a "sprint", but tbh I was just happy just to be able to stay in with the front bunch.

A breakaway of 8 lads were unlucky when half way through they took a right instead a left and by the time they corrected their error, they were back in the bunch, the exception being Robin Kelly and Ryan Sherlock. The two lads done well to stay away, there was some stiff wind towards the end and once it came to a sprint, well, its hard to see beyond Robin!

The course was 68km, ave speed for A4 was 39kph.

And aidan.offbeat and Dave (and a.n.other whose name escapes me) went well in the A1/2 group, taking plenty of turns after the early attacking settled down. Paul Kennedy is flying too in the early part of the season and was unlucky to miss the break-one to watch for the rest of the season.

A wrote a quick report on it up here: http://ryansherlock.blogspot.com/

Safe good wide roads & well organized.

My mistake... waiting for Robin (I didn't know who it was until too late) I would have liked to have tried to solo it in from there.

When we caught the A3/A4 group, I went straight to the front and drilled it - 53x11 spun out - it was a downhill though :)

I empathise with you having spent a winter trying to chase Robin around Waterford and a week recently in the Canaries. The last man in Ireland that i'd like to be in a two man break with right now on a flat or rolling course. There's a video of him on our website taken from his helmet cam of him chasing me down, I am holding 50kph for just over a kilometre and he just breezes across to me in a few hundred meters without getting out of the saddle. Incredible power.

Good luck this season. A few hills and you'll be winning all around.

Almost as disheartening as when participating in a league race two years and I was giving it everything I had, heartbeat to the max, full on effort but I was flying it, absolutely eating road, maximum power output, thinking lads were probably struggling to keep up with me....

...and then Barry Meehan strolled up beside me on his bike, not a bother on him, took his time to steady himself for a picture of me with his camera and then calmly proceed to take over duties at the front.

It was there and then I ceased to have any illusions about myself as a cyclist!

I presume as this is in the open domain it's ok to discuss. If not, mods feel free to delete. Just wondering what could have been serious enough to warrant a 9 week (partially suspended) ban.

I was at the race and didn't see anything suspect, rule breaking or dangerous.

By comparison, a few lifetime bans could have been awarded in Clonard at the weekend.

Thread here - I suspect there's not much more that can be said given the comments I made in that thread
