So for years have only used web based mail as I tended to bounce between computers alot and only new of POP not IMAP.

Anyhow I've come to realise I waste alot of time loading webpages logging in etc etc and tend now bounce computers less and want to set up a mail client.

But under OSx - whats is the best one to use - for mutliple mail accounts ?

I'm so far out of touch as to be clueless on the topic

My favourite is Sparrow, fantastic little client especially for gmail. However it doesn't have exchange support.

The default client is ok but has exchange support. Thunderbird is also worth looking at.

I use a Gmail app I created using Fluid (www.fluidapp.com) which essentially loads the web based gmail in a small separate app window. Cleaner and more functional than the default app :)

What email provider are you using?

I use hotmail so I was a bit tied into using outlook 2010 (bad mail client syncing due to POP3 Server) but outlook works great. Its surprising how much better it is using a mail client, I never used one before I got my mbp.

If you have gmail you have a lot of options.

Mostly gmail but have one exchange/outlook one.

I think Mail is the best. I have about 5 accounts set up with it. It does everything I need. This is the Lion version btw.

Sparrow looks nice, but I found it rather heavy on resources, which defeats the whole point of it.

I've heard the Lion version of Mail is much better than SL version ? Have you used both ?

You could redirect the exchange mail through gmail (i think) and then set up a personal, work or whatever folder and save gmail in keychain and possibly use gmail notifier if you want quicker access and alerts.

Having it all go through gmail can be annoying for some people, but I prefer consolidation. Plus you can keep a copy on each of the email accounts for redundancy if you want. I find having it all in gmail is easiest to organize and have access to wherever you are.

In terms of interface it's a big improvement over the old version and contains a few long overdue features, but even in its earlier incarnations I always thought Mail was the best. I've been using it since 10.0.0 and have never considered switching.

Well Mail is out - crapped itself when I tried to sync via imap to gmail account - bugs galore.

    Thunderbird here I come

Have a look at thunderbird, sunbird and lightning. Thunderbird is the mail client, sunbird the calendar client and lightning integrates them.

I use Mailplane together with growl for alerts. I find that the customer service is good & it is so easy to add or remove gmail accounts.

I use Apple Mail for OS10.4 and OS10.6. My understanding is that it works fine for Gmail (Google the instructions). However, I avoid Google because they (allegedly) scour your messages and store all your personal data.
