Hi - just wondering if anoyne has seen this and whether it will actually work in Ireland. Has a UK sticker on it and I assume it is for Freeview - just wndering why they would sell it if it is not any use.

Staff unable to help with my query in Dundrum Tesco.

If it's Freesat it connects to LNB and Dish, but missing channels on Freesat HD. UK TV only.
If it's Freeview it won't work at all.
If it's "Freeview HD" it will likely actually "tune" in Irish Digital TV, but will not be fully compatible. Except in a few areas it won't get UK TV.

Might be these or similar (some versions are better than others, I believe).

Those need a UK delivery address. Tempting, but not a PVR. Anyone know if the non-Freesat mode supports Diseqc? otherwise no French Jazz etc.

Can't remember what it said exactly - will need to pop back in to get name and model number - had a list of theUK stations I asusme you get with Free view - was quite a small box - you could pick the box up in one hand - beside the 42" LG flatscreens they just got in.

    See the post before yours.

Bring it back to Tesco it wont receive Saorview. It is only for the UK market and the over spill areas around the Border and some places along the east coast.

It's obsolete for UK, hence cheap!

Even N.I. Will have HD at the end of the year or early 2013. It won't work on the N.I. Mini-Mux either.

    It'd make a nice doorstop.

Spotted these for sale in Tesco Wilton Cork just yesterday !!!!

Unless you want to use it to just receive RTE's digital radio stations, it is useless for TV

    .

It will still work in the UK, just won't get the HD versions of the main UK channels, is it appropriate to use the word 'obsolete' for something that still works there?? I am not aware of any switchoff/changeover date for MPEG2 channels to MPEG4 there ??

Were MW/LW radios termed 'obsolete' after FM was first introduced in the UK in the 1950s??

FM still doesn't have national coverage much less international coverage and so
    MW/LW are still in use.

Each FM station uses more bandwidth than BBC Radio 4 LW
and everything else to the left of it on the dial , all the way to DC , including other stations, amateur bands , atomic clock signals, submarine communications etc. - Chalk and cheese.

In contrast each digital multiplex uses far less bandwidth and power with better reception in most cases, so it's a no brainer

Better comparison would be 405 line being phased out.

Or perhaps a VHF I only TV during the phasing out of VHF Band I

Or buying a UHF only TV up north back in the day.

All of the early adopters of MPEG2 DTT are moving to MPEG4 / HD, the writing is on the wall since there are improvements in quality/savings in bandwidth

Or perhaps a VHF I only TV during the phasing out of VHF Band I

Band I only tvs were only in use very early on & could be modified with an add-on band III tuner. In the UK the 2 bands were used side by side until all VHF tv ceased in 1985. Ireland used both right from the start & both were at that stage already well established in the UK, with the BBC & ITA VHF networks maturing nicely.

    ie. obsolete

The addition of a set top box doesn't mean the original TV isn't obsolete, and the modifications back then would have cost far in relative terms.

Band I wasn't phased out though, if you didn't care about ITV you could have stuck with your Band I set right until the end of 405 lines.

I live in the border overspill area. Will this box be any use to me?

This is an old thread. Are you referring to the Dion 'twin scart' Freeview box?

It will only work with Freeview standard def. services: no Freeview HD or Saorview.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

Don't buy a "Freeview box". Especially Dion Twin Scart in Tesco

    See www.saortv.info
