There was a discussion late last year. I think the conclusion was that their advantages were small and outweighed by expense and higher maintenance.

    Hi Barry,

More marketing hype to get more money out of you. Even the kings of marketing hype Zipp, have said ceramic bearings have no advantage over top quality steel bearings.

Now that being said there are a lot of wheelsets out there with cheap hubs and crap bearings, but in the case of Fast Forward, their standard hubs are terrific. I've read somewhere from a bike mech in the know, that Vacansoleil DCM actually use the standard hubs, but with the DT Swiss decals to keep the Fast Forward & Dt Swiss marketing Depts happy.

I've a F6/F4 set with the regular hubs and they're fantastic. Don't waste your money on the ceramic options. Also the regular FFWD hubs build into stiffer wheel than with the DT Swiss.

If you want to fry yer noodle have a read of this :

    Thanks lads for the replys
Mind is made up no going to go for the standard hubs in the Fast Forward wheelset F4R.Cant justify the different in price at 200e for ceramic hubs.
Now need to find tubulars at a good price Continental Competition anyone buy these at a bargain price recently?

+1 on the ceramic bearings. I have them on my crankset and I can tell no difference with a chain on. Just save yourself the 200euro.

If you are going to spend 60+ on tubs, why don't you go for Veloflex/FMB?

Cant help you with the Contis I'm afraid. I only use Veloflex Carbon 22s which I get from bike-palast :

Wicked tyre and a very good price there, finding the Vittoria Mastik One cement is another story though, I had to get mine in from Holland.

Just to feck with your head :), you can get a mixed set for the same money if you ask. I've an f6r in the back with an f4r in the front. Only adds about 40g over a full f4r wheelset, but will give you a stiffer rear wheel ( not saying the f4r aint stiff btw), yet still not be worried about crosswinds as you'll have the 38mm in the front.

That's a nice price for Veloflex. I'd be minded to try them next when my current pair wear out.

Why the search for Mastik? Do they have the same latex layer over the base tape that Vittorias have?

They're the business, and the clincher version ( Corsa 22 )with Vredstein latex tubes is almost up there with the tubs.

General consensus is to use Mastic One with Veloflex, Vittoria and in fact with anything other than Conti. Have a quick read through the 125 page Glueing Tubulars thread over on Weight Weenies ;)

Is it cotton or latex-covered base tape?
