I was almost out of my usual ammo for the .223 (american eagle 50gr hp) the two dealers i went to didnt have any so i got a box of Remington UMC Hollow points.

Thursday night i shot 3 foxes with the AE ammo and they all droped where they stood as usual. on friday i rezeroed with the umc and went out for a lamp shot 4 foxes and had 2 runners they didnt go far but still. Saturday night i shot 3 foxes and all didnt stay down one even dropped and i watched him through the scope for a sec then lamped around and went to get the tail half way to him he slowly got up and tryed heading for the ditch so i had to put another in him.

Has anyone eles used these Rem UMC on foxes and how did they preform?
also why did the ammo not kill 5 out of 7 foxes outright when they were all solid shots?

I used Remington UMC for a while, never had a major issue regards killing power. It just wasnt as acurate in my rifle as the American eagle so I started using it. I would have the odd runner with it, but I also had the same with AE. I had one last night, but he didnt go far. Ive never had a runner with a ballistic tip hornady.
I think it just happens some times with more solid bullets that dont expand as fast unless they hit bone.
Any HP nearly always leave massive exit wounds, but with the ballistic tips sometimes there would be none. No energy lost.
I think the umc and AE both would have similar energy when they hit but if they pass through its lost.

Well we have shot 96 foxes they last four months using ballistic tip and yet to have a runner.
Had a good few before we changed.

I would be guessing the same.

Feidhlim, how were they on accuracy in the fox vitals? (Not questioning your shooting, just wondering how accurate they are in the field).

One thing I must start doing is opening them up.

You should give these a try €40 for 50

tried a box of umc's and didnt like em at all, not accurate passed 150 imo and the 3 foxes i shot with them did not die straight away ether and the shots were well placed 2 of which were under 100 yards.

EDIT; i shot them at a 10mm steel plate too and was less than impressed with the damage done to it, at 100 yards the 40gr were going through while the umc 50gr were bearly leaving a dent out the other side

Heve not had a single runner with 40gr Vmax, not so much as a twitch so ill be sticking with them.

I want to try out them 55gr soft points tho

i used the umc a couple of times and just gave up on them, not very consistent and no good past 150y. you may as well be using a .22 magnum.

if you are serious about shooting foxes you cant beat a ballistic tip round, i know there are some lads that swear by the cheep stuff and fair play to them. but if you shoot a lot of foxes then use the best you can get.

nothing worse than missing a fox that you were sure was bang on

When I zeroed them in at 1.5'' high at a 100 they dropped 5'' more than the 55gr vmax at 200. Im using the american eagle 50gr hp now and find them deadly accurate out to 300yards in my cz. There cheaper to at €13 a box. Every fox Ive hit was dead before he hit the ground.

@John -they were good on paper 3 shots touching at 100m and i felt all were good shots (you kind of know if you pull a shot if you know what i mean)

@Lee -where do you get those horadys? i tried foicchi 55gr sp and they were good and i think they use a horndy head

I get all my ammo of Paul O'halloran(Galla) in Drangan. He's one of the cheapest dealers in the country. I think if you buy in bulk he will deliver. His number is on the dealer list Thread on here somewhere.

If I ever have to go to dublin or kildare for any reason I'll get a couple of boxes and I'll drop them off to you.

A buddy of mine uses nothing but 45gr umc's in his cz and he shoots more foxes than anyone I know. He sets his rifle at 50yards, and he can shoot foxes with them out to 300 yards, I've even shot some with his rifle too.
I tried them in my rifle and to say they sucked would be an understatement. I've been using 55gr hornady v-max in my 233 and find them deadly accurate

    If you're stuck...

If you can scan your license then you can buy ammo legally from any dealer in the country. Email them the license, and either send a Postal Money order or if they'll take plastic details, then they'll send the ammo by secure courier to your door, but you'll have to be at home to receive the package. Costs something like €7.50 - €10. Job done :)

Thanks john, I might look into that.
