Replacing battery cells in laptop battery

I have a dell Inspiron R15 (or later known as N5010) laptop with a near dead battery (Type: J1KND 11.1v 6 cell 48Wh)

I bought a full battery replacement "genuine dell part" on ebay... some chance... holds half the charge of the original... but is okay for now.

I spotted an instructable here that shows how to replace the inside cells of the laptop battery with ones from ebay. (handy enough with electronics so am okay on this front)...

i want to do this with the old original battery i took out but my problem is that i cant seem to track down the cells at all on ebay.

    Printing on the cells states:

(Stamped onto cell case): Sanyo R1112 and 0133

(Then ink dot printed on each cell is): A OCCA5B and 106411

Anyone on here got any ideas on where i might be able to track these or similar non sanyo replacement cells down?

Just a caution I looked into this for power tools, you really need a spot welder to join the batteries together, solder ect puts too much heat into the cells.

There is a circuit board in your battery. This board counting charging cycle, calculating capacity and send this information to mainboard controller. If you replace all the cells, in next step you should reprogram eeprom on circuit board in your old battery. Otherwise you may not see the difference with new cells.

Anyway be careful- It's extremely danger what you want to do.
    Cheers

    Thanks for the replys...

I did know about the danger/problems with carefully replacing cells (did it before with a few de walt tools with no probs)... but never knew about the cycle counting in laptop batteries.

Could have a problem there so.

True also about the cells cost vs new replacement battery... spotted that on ebay when i was checking last night.

Feck it so... will have to go down the road of just buying a replacement battery so... but i have been stung once already with that dodgy replacement "genuine dell part" on ebay from a far east seller... and got stung on import too. (worked out about €50 all in).

And there is no way im forking out for a €100+ replacement directly from dell as haven't the funds to splash out like that.

Could someone on here maybe recommend a trustworthy site or a ebay seller they have used in the past?

Unlucky, usually it makes little odds if not genuine.

    Amazon sellers? N5010

At least you can read reviews.

Thanks for that but there isnt a single review for any 15R/n5010 battery sellers on amazon. i did search amazon for N5010 batteries earlier in the week... but not one of those amazon sellers has any reviews, so i am cautious.

By me saying that "it wasnt a genuine dell battery"... what i mean was the replacement i had bought from the far east seller on ebay was as dodgy as funk... the thing only held a half charge most of the time and you would have to plug/unplug/plug in again the charger to the laptop before it would recognise the charger was trying to charge to replacement battery.

I dont mind if it my next replacement battery is dell or not... i just dont want to get stuck again with a dodgy battery... i cannot afford to because i need my laptop for everyday/work use.

Im looking for a reputable amazon or ebay seller or laptop battery website people on here have previously used themselves.

You won't get a genuine battery on either Ebay or Amazon.
Amazon are better though as they don't generally advertise the batteries as genuine.

I use an almost 4 year old Dell Inspiron 1720.
A genuine battery from Dell costs around €150. The original (9 cell) lasted 2 years. I don't want to spend €150 on a battery for a laptop that is now worth less than that.

I bought one on Ebay for €30 which lasted well for 9 months, but began to seriously degrade over a 1 month period.
I bought one 7 months ago on Amazon for €25. It's still going well, but I expect it to last another 4 - 5 months.

I looked at replacing the cells in my old battery, but figured it would be cheaper to buy a non-genuine one for €25 rather than sourcing & replacing individual battery cells.
