Monitor won't display for new computer.

I recently ordered parts for a new computer and assembled it fine. All peripherals though (monitor, mouse, keyboard) are from my old computer.

I plugged everything in to my new computer and fired her up and ... nothing is displaying on my monitor. It is definitely turned on, the light on it is orange which is usually what happens when it's turned on but the computer is off, but the computer is definitely on (all the fans are running, optical drive working, LED's on etc).

The screen is definitely not broken either, because when I press one of the buttons on the monitor a message comes up saying "In power save mode. Press any key on keyboard or move mouse" (And then I did that for the sake of it, but nothing happened)

Originally I thought it was because it wasn't plugged into the right place at the back of the computer. I had it plugged into the motherboard (because they were both vga) but then noticed a dvi socket on the GPU, so I put an adapter on the monitor cable and plugged it into the GPU, but still nothing appeared on my screen.

What could be wrong? Is it possible that my monitor just simply isn't compatible with my new rig?

Is your graphics card seated correctly?

Pretty sure it is. I've even tried taking it out and putting it back in again just to make sure. But nothing appears on my screen even when I plug the monitor into the motherboard anyway (which also has a socket for it). I tried plugging it into my old computer again as well and it worked fine.

What type of cable connection are you using between the computer and the monitor ?
Is there an input selection switch on the monitor i.e. VGA, DVI, HDMI selector.

Some monitors need to be switched to select the correct video input

only vga to the monitor I think? sounds like it, as he had to use a vga/dvi cable converter

I'd take the graphics card out of the pc for the moment, and just try and get the monitor going with just the motherboard video out.

Have you checked the refresh rate the Card is set to? might be too high

You could have a loose or faulty RAM module, try reseating the memory, booting off with just one in, then the other. Dodgy/loose memory can cause such an issue

Ok there's a few suggestions there that I'll try (to the best of my ability of understanding). I'll report back soon.
