Ignition coil arcing

Does arcing indicate the coil is shagged? I have been having problems starting the car when it is damp. Would the 2 problems be related?

Probably just a worn lead :)

Arcing.... as in, between windings on the coil? Or between the coil itself and a nearby earth.

That's not good... at the very least it means the insulation on the coil has broken down. Either it's been damaged by damp, or by something else gone wrong further along the HT leads, or the sparkplugs.

Yes or possibly plug lead depending on the exact make/model and engine.

    Yes.

Leads have all been changed with no improvement with starting in damp conditions. The arcing is across the face of the coil if you understand me.

It is a 96 polo. I have been told the coils do go on those models.

Do you mean the coil or the distributor cap?

The distributor cap is the part on the end of the head with 5 leads on it. The coil is the small square part on the bulkhead with one HT lead and a multiplug.

Deffo the coil. I changed the distributor cap and rotor arm with all the leads.

In the normal course of affairs damp would not affect the coil?

Sounds like a coil issue then. The casing on them cracks sometimes.

'twould, on some cars the coil has a rubber coat type thing over it to provide protection against dampness :)

I checked the coil today in the daylight and there is a huge crack on the front of it.
Guess I will need to get a new one.
