Uploading a VOB file to youtube

First off this is my first time uploading a video and Im not very techie minded so bear with me.

I have a dvd that I want to put sections of up. When I initially googled editing videos for youtube it came up with uploading the clip first then editing, grand.

But when I try to do it straight off the file is too big. VOB file if that makes any difference.

I have the windows movie maker to edit it but it doesn't support this type of file apparently so downloaded a free converter and changed it to a mpg( a copy of it).

As a mpg the movie editor says I dont have to codex to support that type of file!

Could someone tell me please how to upload this video?

Convert the VOB to Xvid/Avi and you could use something like VirtualDub to split it. Vobs are pure uncompressed Mpeg2 video and are very large, converting to Xvid will make the size much smaller, I'm fairly sure youtube would have upload size limits!

but seen as you're uploading a dvd it will probably get flagged as copyrighted and removed so you need to ask yourself if its worth the effort.

It could be a home video but yes OP if you are going to effort of uploading copyright material there is a chance of it getting removed and yourself warned by Youtube

at a push, i'd say use autogk to rip the dvd (assuming it's not copy protected, if it is, that's a conversation for you to have with someone outside of boards.ie as we can't tell you how to circumvent copy protection and it's illegal etc. etc.) and then import it into windows live movie maker (which you already have) and edit it in there before uploading your finished product to youtube.

googling for autogk will not only find you the software, but also plenty of guides on how to use it, but it is a pretty straightforward to use bundle of all the tools you'll need with a decent GUI to help automate the task, compared to trying to figure out virtualdub on it's own.
