I notice that there are quite a lot of portraits done now ,where instread of the person bing captured " head on " straight in the frame they are maybe at an angle in the frame. Is this achieved during the shot or is it photo shopped. Sorry if this sounds basic but Im a novice and any advice is appreciayed.

Have you any examples ? It's a little hard to understand exactly what you mean.

If it's what I'm thinking you are saying then it's just shot like that. It would be up to the person who's portrait you are taking which way they would prefer to be shot.

Here are a few portraits Sinead took straight on.

I would think it's better discipline to hold the camera at an angle when shooting rather than rotate in post-processing. You loose part of the image when you rotate anyway.

    Wha?

I was always under the impression that the photographer controlled the camera - not the sitter.
Isnt it the photographer's job to get a feel for the subject and show them in a way befitting the intention of the image?

Christ, if it was as simple as saying "Shoot me from this angle" we'd all be photographers! :D

Hmmm.. not sure what you mean either? Do you mean head on like the shots i took? (Which is really not a conventional portrait position at all!) Or do you mean the person is framed slightly diagonally in the frame? Maybe link to a few examples :)

I think he's referring to a fairly basic rule of thirds composition. Someone else can explain. There's very few "head on" portraits I like. Never liked it in painting, even more of a dislike for it in photography.

Thanks for replies so far , I think I now know that the shots I am talking about are taken with a camera taken at an angle for example

    The one below also?

I assume similar effects could be done with photoshop?

Also what sort of effects would have been used in this photo. Was it post photo?

uh, yeah the first two are probably taken with the camera tilted, or you could rotate them afterwards in photoshop and then crop, it's much of a muchness.

The 3rd one has been over-processed and has had its highlight completely blown out and the whole thing probably horrible over-sharpened as well (though it's hard to tell from that sized image). It's not a look I'd be tempted to replicate.

Sir, I beg to differ, You're going to lose a whole bunch of picture rotating in post . Compose in the camera instead and shoot accordingly.
