I'm on Jobseekers Allowance at the moment but it turns out I have to repeat attend a class for this semester. Will I still be eligible to receive Jobseekers or will I lose it?

Are you on job seekers and attending full time education?

Try the back to education allowance.

No, I finished college last June. I failed a class though so I have to repeat it.

I would only get that if I were repeating all of the modules, from what I gather.

There is something called the Back to Education Part-Time Education Option and the Dept of Social Protection might let you repeat the one class under cover of that. Make the obvious argument that it is, of course, going to up your employment prospects to have repeated the necessary class.

    Description of Option
The Part-Time Education option was introduced to enable unemployed persons to attend part-time day/evening courses of education or training and retain their Jobseekers Allowance or Jobseekers Benefit provided that they continue to satisfy the conditions of being available for and genuinely seeking employment on an on-going basis. The purpose of this option is to enhance the employability prospects of participants.

Other than that, there is this in the Operational Guidelines for Jobseekers Allowance, but if you have classes on many days your money would be cut a lot.

    Student Disqualifications
A person is disqualified from receipt of JA for any days in which they are attending a full-time day course of study, instruction or training at one of the following institutions:

    a school,
    a university,
    a college of a university,
    a Regional Technical College
    an Institute of Technology,
any institution to which the National Council for Educational Awards Act, 1979, applies,
any other institution to which the Local Authority (Higher Education Grants) Acts, 1968 to 1992 apply,
other institutions as may be prescribed by the Minister from time to time.

When you go into the Dep of Social Protection office, try to get to speak to someone who knows about the Part-Time Education set-up.

Thanks. I'll enquire about that tomorrow.
