Hypothetically speaking, could a person go from a 1st WHV (having completed the required 88 days regional work) onto a 457 before the end of the 1st year and then, should the person be let go from the sponsoring company, then transfer onto a 2nd WHV?

It's an unusual one but could happen...

Yep, no problem with that at all once you've done the regional work and still meet the age requirements.

    Yeah, no reason why not.
After the sponsoring company let you go, you have 28 days to find a new sponsor, or a new visa. No reason why it can't be a WHV.
And as the and WHV can applied for onshore no need to leave and then return.

If t was me, I'd spend 3 weeks looking for a sponsor, then go on the wHV, and keep looking for a sponsor.
