    Hello all,

I've been seriously considering ditching Clikpic and switching to Wordpress or Zenfolio instead.

Barry O'Carroll recommended Wordpress. Would anyone second that?

I just find Clikpic too cumbersome to customize.

    Thanks, Noel.

I have no actual experience, but I think the wordpress templates look fantastic.

Do you sell prints? If sonwhich offers the best options?

    Noel

I think you need a clear idea what you want from your site, that will then let you decide what you need to do to get it built.

There are 2 versions of wordpress, the .com version where they look after lots of the technical stuff including the hosting, and the .org version where you do it yourself.

My own site is now on wordpress (self hosted) and it's true to say it's hugely adaptable but you have to be a person who likes tinkering with stuff to get it just the way you want.

    Thanks guys.

    What I'm looking for is:

    - A slick gallery feature
    - Optional client passwords for galleries
    - Highly customizable look.
    - A blog
    - Online sales would be good but not essential.

So I go with independent hosting, could I build the site with Wordpress.org and buy a photography/gallery theme to make it look slick?

There are loads of sites selling themes for wordpress, I use themeforest, but there are loads of others - just do a search on google

Check out Woothemes for the Commerce side of it, so simple to set up!

If you don't go with one of their themes, i recommend using their woocommerce plugin (Free), the best i've seen!

Yes you could, your first stop for the gallery would probably be nextgen gallery but there are loads of options or you could organise your shots on flickr or picasa and use something like photonic.

Loads of fun for you there.

I had a good look at Zenfolio last night and while it looks good and is easy to setup, I'm inclined to bite the bullet and go with my own hosting with Wordpress and some gallery like Nextgen (thanks nilhg).

    It's goodbye to Clikpic!

Before you leave Clikpic take the time to give wordpress a test run, install it at home and have a play with it, figure out how to get the structure of the new site right with the default twenty twelve template, then you can decide on different templates and added features.

Great idea, thanks! :) I was thinking I'd have to upload it to a webserver with MySQL.

EDIT: That was easy! I just need to install Nextgen Gallery.

OK, I have everything up and running locally.

I have to say I'm very impressed with Wordpress.org. It's easy to use, very easy to install plugins and themes. I've had to do some editing on the php files but not a lot. Definitely the way to know if you're at all web savy.

    Thanks to everyone!

Temporary test site is now hosted at 000webhost.com. Took a bit of hacking to get it migrated!

    http://noelkellyphoto.comyr.com/wordpress/

It's a first stab at developing a WP site but I think it's not too bad :)

    No still the same
    Website Under Review
You are seeing this page because the system administrator of 000webhost.com is currently checking this website for malicious content. This redirect page will be removed once we finish manually checking all files on this account. Since we check over 100 websites per day, it can take about 2-4 hours to complete. If you are the owner of this website, you will get an email confirmation once it's done. If you are a visitor, please come back later.

www.000webhost.com is the most popular free web hosting provider, and as such, suffers from abusers. Around 5% of users sign up here just to start hacking or phishing websites or causing other problems. So, in order to survive, we must monitor what our users are hosting.

We are sorry for the inconvenience, but checking all content manually is the only way to provide you with the most secure and reliable service. If you find any illegal websites on our network, you can report it here.

OK, it's working fine for me with Firefox but when I tried it with IE, it gave the "under review" page so it must be because it knows I'm the author (cookies?).

Apparently I will receive and email when it's reviewed

EDIT: Seems to be working now. It works in IE and it still worked after I cleared the cookies.

Showing up for me now Noel, everything seems to work fine, now your job is to personalise it a bit and add some more content.

Thanks. Content aside, what do you think of the general layout and look?
