    Hi All,

Would anyone on here live in / be from Killester and know if the ceilings in the houses have asbestos?

I have had a house surveyed (pre-purchase) and was told its possible it could have asbestos and I am trying to find out if it has before purchasing.

So if anyone knows first hand I would appreciate the heads up to help me make decision....

    Thanks

    BRC

It was probably added in minute quantities as a fire retardant in the paint or something.

I wouldnt worry bout it too much..asbestos is only really dangerous when people are exposed to it in industrial proceseses.

the most common source of asbestos in old Irish private housing from my experience is old asbestos slates. Have a look at the slates are they natural (actually made from slate) or are they asbestos powder cemented to look like slates?

Also shouldn't the survey have specified the amount and source of the asbestos?

I've been told by a few specialists that Artex ceilings have small quantities of asbestos. My understanding is that the percentage is tiny.

If it is early to mid 20th century, you can be almost guaranteed that there is some asbestos. However there are many houses in Killester, to many designs and by many builders, so there is no way for us to know about your house.

The greatest risk is with any asbestos that could become airborne, e.g. crumbling / flaking insulation. Asbestos in solid plasters and roof tiles is a much lower risk as it can't easily become airborne.

Do you think the neighbours would mind if I called in and asked?
