Chemical storage

I know there are guidelines and best practice but as I am now in a school where a lot of these have never been considered I need to get a flammable storage cabinet for liquids and solids and also an acid press.

Does anyone know if there is specific ventilation requirements for acids storage in schools or if there is somewhere I can find out?

    Thanks

try the building section of the Dept, they would have all the necessary specs.
Obviously all money in grants was spent elsewhere!!

This document (http://chemistry.slss.ie/resources/downloads/ch_sd_safetyandstorage.pdf) shows you how to colour code and store your chemicals. It's a little out of date in that there are some chemicals that needed to be got rid of as of last May (there's a circular on the Dept website somewhere). Big thing is that your flammables need to be stored away from everything else in a flame resistant cabinet.

Cheers all - I know what SHOULD be there but I landed there in September and there was none of it there - no presses for ANYTHING! They never had chemistry there until now and as the chemistry teacher I basically want to cover my ass and get it all sorted out. Chemicals in there for the last 10-11 years that have never been used!

Just not sure if I need to get the acid press ventilation plumbed up to the fume hood outflow. Wouldn't be a big deal only there is no window in the chemical storage room.

I wasn't aware that you need ventilation for an acid cupboard - why would you?

But as far as I know, the chemical store room itself should have an extractor fan permanently on to remove vapours in case of spillage. The extractor needs to be strong enough to cope with the size of the room. I think there is a specification re time for a complete air change, governed by the size of the store room but sorry, can't remember where we got the info. It may have been from Shaws when they upgraded our lab. I think the DES has specs for new labs too. Or you could try the English science teachers association who are way ahead.

    Thanks.

Don't think it has to be but I want to make sure.
It is a small room that has no ventilation so I just want to check it out.
