so ive had an android for almost too years. its in fairly bad condition as its been dropped a lot and its covered in scratches, cracks and what not. I'm wondering if I should stay on android or switch to ipone. my android has been great since i got it and ive never had any problems. thing is its really hard to get an unbiased opinion of which is actually better - android users swear by androids and iphone users swear by the iphone. online reviews often compare both types but they're generic. surely someone has had an iphone and an android phone so has first hand experince with both and so is able to advise me here. my android is a samsung galaxy s GT-i9000

Get galaxy 2 (i9100). Similar to what you have, but improved in every way.

I agree with above, the S2 is the new market leader, check out www.gsmarena.com for independent opinion. Being on android opens you up to different phones and versions, rather being stuck on the Iphone. Brother in law has had both and swears by the S2. Different people will have different opinions.

Surely whatever you like best is the best one to choose ?
Personally I don't get why the iphone is so popular. Maybe it's an ease of use thing, but I find the whole OS very bland (and not having flash support is an absolute pain in the hole, makes browsing on the ipad an exercise in booting my laptop :D).
On the other hand, I don't like how deep and complicated the Android OS is/can be. My daughter has one and I find it very frustrating to use even the app store (or whatever the Android/Samsung version is called) - it looks like there three 'stores' on her phone, WTF ?
SOmetimes I wish we could go back to the old days when you could talk, text and play worm...

Having developed and used both for 2 years now the best thing I can say is that only you can answer the question as to which one suits you best.

Both have their positives and both have there negatives, iOS is nice and stable, works well and is user friendly, but is restricted and can be boring, limited choice device wise but does have a bigger better app base and the "look I've an iPhone" image if you want that.

Android is more open but as a result more complex, less user friendly, less apps but wider freedom of device choice, more powerful devices and lots of choice for customization and is still growing so has a lot to look forward to.

SGS III will be launched next month. It's not clear when it will hit the shelves. The SGS II was announced in Feb and arrived in April/May, later on Irish networks, I think.

I've went iPhone4 -> SGS II -> iPhone 4 -> iPhone 4s. Some criticise the "boring" look of the OS (I assume they mean "has no home screen widgets"). I want to get straight into my apps, less of the fancy transitions and effect the better, as far as I am concerned. In the past iOS was clearly better for battery life, but iOS 5 has blunted this a bit, and the Droids have improved.
An irritation for iOS for me is that if you want to WhatsApp a picture or post it to Facebook you need to go to the App and do it form there. More often than not with Android you can share much more easily from any app.
Personally I love the stability and integration of iCloud and iTunes that iOS offers. iMessage has saved me a lot of money texting friends around the world. I find the Apps more stable and of a higher quality. At this stage I have so many iOS apps that even playing with Android is becoming harder and harder to justify.

Personally, I like to 'play' with Android, but I always get irritated by the constant tinkering and go back to iOS. I can't see a time when I won't have an iPhone as my daily driver. Im just too engrained in the Apple ecosystem now. That said I want a galaxy Nexus badly! I would say you should try and have a good play with a friends iPhone and see what you think. It's more about personal preference than anything else.

If you tend to drop your phone, then iPhone is definitely not the device for you. It uses cheap glass for the front and back panels. Whereas the GS2 uses Gorilla Glass.

Have a look at windows phones. They are a nice happy medium between iPhone and android.

I've use all three. I'd put iOS on top followed by WP7 with android in (very) distant third. I've wasted enough of my life 'fixing' computers, I don't want to spend time fixing my phone.

I've had 3 Android phones now from the very beginning G1 to the SGS II, never had to fix anything on any of them. Whereas I've had a Lumnia for less than two months and its already in a frozen state.

Come on now, I'd put my house on you having flashed those 3 Android's numerous times.

You don't need to root or flash something like the Galaxy 2. It's fine as is.

Naturally techies will go and flash experimental roms etc anyway.

Nope, I still have the G1 here beside me running stock Android 1.6, the SGS I and the SGS II on Samsungs stock version of 2.3.5.

Never had a an issue that required flashing nor did I feel the need to root/flash.

By the way I'm no Android fan boy, I also like iOS and WP7 and have two iOS devices and that Lumnia but clearly WP7 has a long way to go to be considered equal to Android or iOS let alone better than them. But here's hoping it does catch up, it means more work for me :D

IF the OP is interested in experimenting with iOS an option would be to get an iPhone on his upgrade and see how he goes. As long as he does not get it on 3 the network will unlock it, if he kept it in a case and in good condition he could sell it on after a few weeks/months if he did not like it. iPhones (particularly the 4s) hold their value well and he would probably not have to pay much, if anything at all to swap into the SGS III/Galaxy Nexus a few months down the road.

Good thinking an unlocked 4S will sell no problem!
