I love this message board. Nobody has a clue.

President #Obama says "no option is off the table" to prevent #Iran getting nuclear weapons #SOTU http://bbc.in/w2MWq3

I was more interested in watching it with the mind that it was Obama kicking off his re-election campaign.
And he's done a pretty damn good job of that.

It's not much of a conspiracy theory but then again the SOTU speech is usually very much inwardly focused, there's a reason foreign policy took up about six or so minutes right at the end. Maintaining the same stance on Iran's nuclear ambitions, Isreal etc really isn't unexpected or important, because domestic reforms, the improvement in the american economy and belittling the GOP is the name of the game here.

I didn't watch the speech...I was out on the piss and too tired to bother with re-runs when I came home.

Did he mention anything about the housing crisis?

    Twice
Once was to mention a bill that'll let people "refinancing at historically low interest rates" saving about 3 grand a year and the other to annouce he's asking the attorney general to form a special task group to expand their investigations into the sub-prime mortgage crisis.

Whether he mentioned Iran specifically or not in this address, I think we all know the Obama administration has a raging hard on for Iran (to put it crudely).

There can be little doubt that this can only escalate

They'd rather not be the administration that let Iran develop nuclear technology on their watch, so to speak, because it'd hand the current GOP candidates a single topic they could use to cover the fact they're barely likable approximations of people with awful ideas.

But they don't really want a war if for no other reason then it's a news story they can't really control and that's very damn dangerous in an election cycle.

And it clashes with the image (note: image, before i get indignant copy-pasta) of Obama as the president who's reigning in the rampant spending of the bush administration and who is placing emphasis on bringing solders home, not sending them out.

I think it's very premature to say things "can only escalate".

As I suspected, a thinly disguised reference to how he's going to give the banks a 4th bailout. Fire up the printing presses for another bout of quantitative easing.
There is already another gold rush on speculation on mortgage backed securities (christ, does the American taxpayer EVER learn?)

They've already escalated. Besides its a touch naive to suggest that Obama wouldn't engage in military action to play up to an image.

War isnt necessarily damaging in an election cycle. There have been very few elections since world war two where the US havent been involved conflict somewhere.

Perhaps the situation wont escalate (although I doubt it) but it certainly wont be as a result of playing up to the vanity of the current president

I have no idea how you took a 4th bailout from that, but by your own words you're just looking for something to back up what you've already decided is true.

That might be true, but I'm at a loss to think of one that has been started during an election campaign.

And I have a funny feeling that Iran is aware of it too. They know full well that even with the terrible GOP candidates that Obama will be facing that the administration don't want to start something that could potentially hand a decisive talking point to the eventual GOP nominee.
