    Hi guys.

Have 7,500 to spend on a car.

Want a diesel between 1.4 and 2.0 litre.

Want to buy in a garage, no private sales.

Other than that open to suggestions?

You'll need to provide a lot more detail about your needs/wants/likes/dislikes before people will be able to give you any meaningful advice.

    Something like this maybe?

I don't know why I like them I just do and they seem to offer excellent value for money?Good check of the service history though to make sure it's been maintaind correctly and it should do big miles with reasonable tax, power, economy and most importantly comfort.

I'm actually easy going about it all, would consider anything. I guess I'd like something that would be reliable and cost of services/replacement parts would be low.

Ford/Toyota/ Volkswagen are all cars I like

Volvo S40 slightly over budget but this one has low miles and plenty of kit and will easily do 55+mpg

Overpriced much.... really check, aderts.ie, donedeal.ie or some sorts of sites, please do not spend 8000 euro on a 2006 car unless you have done your research on it.
Almost 8000 euro on a 2006 S40 is ridiculous, oh and yeah please note the NCT ExpiryJune, 2012. seriously some people....

My advise would be a Volkswagen Passat, a good car much used, and cheap in repairs.
This is at least my choice, Ford Mondeo is good as well, but I only like the new model, but its still not used as much as the Passat, and a TDI engine is economic and strong.

But then again its your wallet.

It all comes down to your preferences,
Do you want a big or small car?
    Do you drive much?
    You like sport or Comfort?
How much money do you want to spend to maintain your car?

These are all important points that can lead to different answers.

Oh dear seriously people, before you spend your hard earned cash look around...

    A 2006 C5 for 8000, you're having a laugh seriously...NCT ExpiryJanuary, 2012.

If your stupid enough to buy that crap you deserve it.

I was never a fan of Citroen but maybe that's because for some reason I thought they were unreliable

They are unreliable, a friend of mine is a mechanic and he said that the suspension needs to be overhauled every 5 years and the clutch is dodgy on the diesels

OP, would a coupe do you or do you need the space/practicality of a saloon/hatchback or estate?

    Something like this:

No they're not. The suspension is just maintenance and the clutch is not a known problem. They HDi is well known for doing intergalactic mileage if looked after properly, much more so than the likes of the Passat.

I'm thinking the Octavia is a serious option, most of what I've read online is positive

I know the OP said garage only, but this is a lot of diesel car for the money - if it could be bought for 5-5.5k.
