Transatlantic - visiting researcher

I posted this in the Studying Abroad forum two days ago but this seems like a busier forum. Hope the mods don't mind this double post...:)

I'm currently looking into Ph.D programmes on both sides of the Atlantic, as my research topic has a comparative element.

Has anyone here got any experience of being a visiting researcher in the US?
Or vice versa - being a visiting researcher in Ireland while doing a Ph.D in a US university?

It's not easy to find info on programme websites. Does it depend on institutional or departmental links? Or could a student find an institution on their own?
And is this a relatively common thing at the doctoral level?

Would be grateful for any info.
