SO (other than bloody long ones ) what steps are you taking?

The strongest geo-magnetic storm in more than six years is forecast to hit the Earth's magnetic field today.

A large chunk of the Sun's atmosphere began hurtling towards this planet on Sunday, travelling at a speed five times faster than normal solar particles.

The US Space Weather Prediction Centre believes the storm could affect airline routes, power grids and satellites.

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station may also be advised to shield themselves in specific parts of the spacecraft to avoid a heightened dose of solar radiation.

Ah but 6 years ago you didn't have an extra 10000 cabbies relying on SatNAvs to get around..... Wait a minute maybe that'll answer another problem, if half of them starve to death trying to find their way home!!!!

Or give them another excuse to overcharge -

"Sorry bud, satnav brought me this way - bleedin' sunspots - that'll be €50 extra"

This is based on the silly presumption there is a problem to be solved.

Dunno about anyone else but I'm just about ready to crack other peoples heads open and feast on the goo inside.

And I hear there was something about sunspots as well?

I wouldn't mind being up in Donegal for the next few days.

Bruce Willis and his pals are going to nuke them with a radioactive Clearasil bomb, problem solved.

The carrington event in 1859 was the biggest magnetic storm to hit Earth ever observed, the Northern lights were seen as far down as Hawaii. But if that was to happen today it would blow every substation on the whole Northern and a large part of the southern hemisphere, there would be such damage to our electrical and communications grid that we would be without electricity some estimate it would take 10 years to repair.

So be afraid be very afraid, or it was just a freak and the Carrington event will never happen again.

No need for tin foil hats.

I was just reading about this burst of energised particles, which will hit the Earth in a few hours' time. Few of you will be able to read the article, but it's a nice picture:

    http://www.iltalehti.fi/ulkomaat/2012012415118071_ul.shtml

I've added translations of the bits that really matter. They are boldfaced:

"Maahan iskeytyi tiistaina kovin aurinkomyrsky yli kuuteen vuoteen, arvioi Yhdysvaltain avaruussääkeskus. (the most severe solar storm for over six years)

Aurinkomyrsky saattaa häiritä satelliittien, sähköverkkojen ja radioliikenteen toimintaa. Myös GPS-paikannusjärjestelmä voi häiriintyä hieman. ... may interfere with the operation of satellites, electrical networks and radio traffic ... There may also be slight interference with GPS systems ...

    - Emme odota merkittäviä vaikutuksia tämänkaltaisesta tapahtumasta, ennusti amerikkalaistutkija Doug Biesecker. .. we do not expect significant effects from an event of this kind, says the American researcher DB ...

    STT-REUTERS-AFP"

It may also affect aircraft navigation equipment in polar regions, but the planes will alter their routes to make up for this. The Space Station has areas where the astronauts will be protected from the higher radiation levels.

The strength of the storm is three on a scale of five and its effects will be felt most strongly in polar regions, so if you don't see any posts from me tomorrow, you'll know that either I or my Internet connection has been fried ...:D:D:D

I'd be more impressed if that was the Southern lights seen in Hawaii.
