Difference between SAMSUNG UE40D5000 and UE40D5520 RE:Saorview

    Hi,

I'm looking at getting either the SAMSUNG-UE40D5000 or SAMSUNG-UE40D5520.

It's for my father and he'll be using it for saorview and freesat (Humax foxsat DVR). I see that they are both saorview approved.

    Q. As they are both saorview approved, Am I right in assuming that they can both display saorview programs in both SD & HD?

    Q. I can't seem to find anywhere if these TVs are both MHEG5 compatible, does anyone know if they are?

I'd prefer to buy the D5000 as it's cheaper and my Dad won't use any of the other 'Smart' functions from the D5520. But, if it's only the D5520 that has the MHEG5 then I'll have to go with that as he uses Teletext a lot.

    Thanks

5520 has smart Tv functioanality and DVB-T2 tuner so it will work for "Freeview HD" as well as Saorview if you are in an overspill area.

MHEG5 - yes on both. Wouldnt be certified otherwise.

The 5520 is €645 from Harvey Normans. They are STG 479 (€575) in the UK shops (Comet, Dixons, Currys!)

    Hi STB,

Thanks for your reply. I think I'll go with the SAMSUNG-UE40D5000 as were not in an overspill area (Galway). Also, he won't use any of the Smart TV functions so the extra €100 for the 5520 would be a waste.

    Cheers

Another 40" Samsung Saorview approved for €470 in DID Galway. (Be aware of the LED vs LCD debate!)

I'm currently confused about this because I recently purchased the UE37D5000, and it doesn't display digital teletext. Samsung confirmed in an email that this model is not MHEG compatible and cannot display digital teletext! This can also be confirmed in the specifications on their website. Yet, this model is indeed Saorview approved (listed here). It would appear that either the Saorview approval process cannot be trusted, or else MHEG-5 is not a mandatory requirement. Nevertheless, it seems to be mandatory based on the first paragraph at this Saorview link.

    John.

    John.

As it it is Saorview approved when you choose Ireland in setup, MHEG5 should be loaded by default.

And MHEG engine is certainly onboard, there is actually a facility to turn it on/off. I have read the spec for this model.

I note from the UK profile of this model that you can turn on/off mheg5. Have you seen this option in the menu's and is it turned off.

If as you say the country profile is locked (I have never heard of this, ever) then this TV is Ireland specific and should have it enabled by default.

The people in Samsung that you have been talking to are obviously the clever people in call centres who are about as useful as a chocolate teapot.

Teracom irdtest@teracom.se did the tests. They dont get the Saorview approval unless they pass all the mandatory requirements.

Contact Saorview. info@saorview.ie or ring RTENL and ask for Brian Geraghty (Saorview Digtial reception manager). Do not use the Saorview helpline, they are useless.

Thanks for the information. Tech support in both Samsung and Saorview is hopeless indeed. The spec for the TV can be found here. It's not initially obvious, but click 'Table View' just underneath and to the left of the picture. Then scroll down to the 'System' heading and see the third entry.
