How much to cut a few branches off a tree?

I need a few branches cut down from a large tree. I got an estimate of €500 from one man, which I thought was shockingly high! I managed to get him down to €400.

Is that the normal price for this kind of work?

    Thank you:)

That sounds like a lot but without seeing the tree, branches height and estimate the work involved it's pretty hard to say.

Could you not do it yourself? Get a saw and a ladder and some handy friends around?

The cost will depend on where the tree is, how big it is & whether you want the branches taken away. Tree surgery is expensive because of the need for specialist tree climbers, insurance & costly chippers. Now you may not need any of these.

Post a pic of the tree with something nearby to get an idea of scale & size. Then we will have a better idea of the cost.

The OPs post is kind of vague, the tree and its age/size/height/health is unknown, and you are giving out advice that I wouldnt consider good advice.

If the OP cuts the branches the wrong way, then the trees growth could be stunted or even worse, the tree wont heal up properly and could become infected and die.

No consideration for the OPs health and safety either,or anyone elses health and safety either.Potential damage to any nearby structures/properties or cars.

A tree surgeons job and costs can be/or are expensive for several very good and obvious reasons.

Think about those reasons, for a second or 2.

There is a reason why it is totally against health & safety regulations to be up a ladder with a chainsaw

Like using/wearing the correct/approatiate PPE (Personal Protective Equipement) and a licence to operate a chainsaw.

Ladder should be positioned "1 in 4" and secured propperly and/or footed by a 2nd person.

In the UK it is totally illegal to cut from a ladder. You have to climb above the cut & be either on the tree or hanging from a harness. The classic accident is where the branch goes the wrong way & knocks you off the ladder.

    I know that.

You still need a propperly secured and/or footed ladder to get up into a large tree though.

Then you're up in the tree with you're "certified/in date" fall arrest/harness.

Chainsaw on its own seperate fall arrest/rope too,and is held by 2nd person/tree surgeon who is down on the ground.

    BTW,my last post was joking.

Seriously,do not do that at all, unless you,re stuck knee deep in the swamp in the Everglades,or stuck in the Borneo Jungle and need to get up a tree to look around.:D

There was that classic on rogue traders where the fella climbed the tree & then sat on the branch that he was cutting ! Earlier on he felled a branch onto his mates head.

    Anyway..................

OP,please do post a picture of the tree and its location to any potential hazzards/propperties etc.

DONT do anything until we see the picture,as your health, safety and you're life is priceless.

    Thanks.

And if anyone is planning to cut branches or trees please remember that they are often far heavier than you think they are. I have seen so many cases where someone tries to "guide" a tree or branch with a rope & the rope snaps.

Tree surgeons are expensive for the obvious reasons of it being dangerous and skillful work. All you can do is compare a few quotes and see if you can do better on price
I know a pro climber that charges 250 for anything up to a day's work. That's what the tree surgeon pays him, then you have the vehicle & wood-chipper,insurance,green waste to sort out.
People think they charge a bomb but in all honesty the costs of running the business are prohibitive.

Whatever you do make sure the contractor is insured and qualified(check paperwork). The last thing you want is a cowboy having an accident on your property.

And if anyone thinks that €250 is easy money they should try it :D

I "gave up" climbing & now keep my feet firmly on the ground. When you add typical Irish weather to the mix it can be a pig of a job.
