What are the general tax considerations for somebody selling Apps on online stores ? We can leave out the more complicated topic of international tax. I assume the two main tax's applicable are VAT and Income tax ?

Lets say a part time developer created an APP that generated 2000 euro in a year , would he have to file a VAT return and Income Tax return, or is it more complex ? I could imagine a situation where the money you earn could be simply spent again on an accountant trying to figure it out.

I would also like to know more about this, it's pretty confusing. When I opened a google market account there was a very confusing section about VAT, with several options. Still haven't bothered to sell anything through it tho so not had to solve the vat question.

i bump this old thread, cos i want to know the same thing that the two people asked.
I as the second poster, have made my account there, but havent uploaded nothing yet, cos i want a clear answer to that question before. Working full-time most of the time otherwise, just developed few apps and would like to try to put them up and see if i make any money with them. But the tax question is so confusing, so if someone have alwady been in that situation and made an app that made a lil money, or just knows whats the story, let us know how it works as well?

Income tax should be straightforward - you're taxable where you're resident. Although, I think some jurisdictions can withhold tax on distance sales into those countries.

VAT on App sales is not straightforward and whether are not (Irish) VAT is chargeable on the sales, and at what rate, depends on a number of factors, including:

    level of turnover
who you are selling to, eg is it Apple/Google or is it the end user?
    Where the recipient is located
Whether the recipient is a business or an ordinary individual

I haven't seen the Google contract but I've seen the Apple contract which is fairly complex. Which Apple subsidiary and contractual provisions apply can depend on various things.
