Removing google account on HTC/Sensation

My wife purchased a HTC sensation during the autumn.
When I set it up it asked for google account details.
To get past that step I entered my own gmail account settings.
At that time she had no google account of her own.

In retrospect I should have set her up with a google account at that point.

Anyway.. since Android is so tied in with the google account I want to now reset her phone so that it points at *her* google account.
When I went to do this this morning it said that it would involve a full reset of the phone which would delete *all data*.

By all date what does this mean ?
Does it scrub all her SMS messages ? apps ?
I'm not concerned about the e-mails as they are addressed to me and shouldn't be on that phone anyway.
I realise that contacts may be lost but I'm sure I can export/import contacts from my gmail account to hers so that she doesn't lose those once the process is completed.

I'm just trying to understand what a SD card/reset to factor settings will do on her phone.

You can export all the contacts as a .vcf file to her SD card, and yes a factory reset will wipe the phone and start again day one, any pics and videos will remain on the SD card, she should really have all her numbers on the sim, I only ever use sim contacts with numbers tbh, I hate my phone suggesting gmail/fb contacts in there, takes ages to scroll around!

    Thanks for that info, Fieldog.
Someone on the #android , freenode IRC channel told me to look into this app (or similar) for backing up the SMS to SD card.

What exactly are you trying to do here?
Just disassociate your gmail account from the phone and replace it with your wifes?

    Correct Marc.
However, not sure if this is a HTC only limitation and/or version of Android running on it, but to do that requires resetting to factory state on the HTC sensation.

I found this workaround, quoted below, that claims to avoid having to factory reset the phone. This should be of great use to you if it works, as would avoid the pain of backups, resetting and restoring the phone.
The easiest way to change accounts is to go to Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>Gmail and clear all data. I also did it for gTalk and all other Google related apps. This created a notification that I needed to redo the setup wizard with a link in the notification to start it. This fixed everything and didn't have to worry about a hard-reset.

Try clearing the data for Google apps and it might work!!

That may be a life-saver, Marc.
When she is back from work later this evening I will try that and will report back if it works.

    Best wishes,
