im thinking of changing my wheels - what would you recomend for about 500 quid. I will be using them for mainly sportifs but maybe a couple of club races. Have ritchey wcs wheels at the moment. Bike is a boardman pro, and id like clinchers.

Also, what are the pros and cons of the deep wheel vs a more traditional wheel etc. The deep wheels will be more aerodynamic, but is there anything else?

    thanks,
    Lenny

Deep section wheels will give you heart attacks on windy days. Mavic ksyrium elite are a fine set of wheels for reasonable weight to cost ratio.

i used to ride motorbikes and remember one particular windy day where i was blown across a lane by a sidewind. not nice!!

Im a bit unsure of what to look for in a wheel - as far as I understand it - a light weight will help with accelerating and climbing, and a deep wheel will help with aerodynamics. Should I save up some more and get a set of light deep wheels? The tart in me thinks that they really do look good :)

The rs80s look nice aswell. (and are much cheaper there than some other sites) Cheers lumen!

You will have to save a lot to get a decent set of deep clinchers. The cheaper ones have aluminum breaking surface and that will make a heavy wheelset, more than 1750gr. Or you can get a full carbon clincher that will probably weight around the 1500gr or maybe less. One option is a custom made with Gigantex rims, see wheelsmith.co.uk for more info.

Lightness matters most at the rim. The RS80s have the same rim as the more expensive dura ace version (WH-7900-C24-CL), but with slightly heavier Ultegra hubs. Ultegra hubs are a sane, sensible choice.

The only downside to the RS80s is that replacement rims are unbelievably expensive - you may as well replace the whole wheel.

I've ridden 50mm carbon wheels in very strong sidewinds and they were fine.

Proper 50mm carbon clinchers typically cost €1k or more.

Spending more than 500 quid on alloy wheels is madness IMO (though I've done it myself, I probably wouldn't again).

I was just gonna say, your man below in Kinetixproducts has those rs80's for sale new- he quoted me 400 for a pair. I didn't look at them, just made a mental note. -I have the dura ace ones and I think they're fantastic. I've em two years now and plenty of miles, still straight as an arrow, never had to do anything to them except put tyres and tubes on em. Based on my experience with them if I ever go to buy deep sections again I'd get the C50 version.
