Just wondering does anyone know why the points for this course are so low, is it not a growth industry?,with good jobs out of it.. Or is it just a very hard course.?

    415 are hardly 'low' points!
It's risen from 290 in 2008 to 415 in 2011 so its definitely growing!

Ciano1 is right, the points are going up for this course. I think, because the course is not as highly publicised as others, career guidance officers overlook it.
The course itself is just as intensive as others. You have to do a language, maths, chemistry, biology and these subjects are important for your leaving cert. Chemistry especially.
The timetable is busy, with labs, lectures and tutorials and first year has a lot of 9am starts. Do not be put off by what I've said, if these subjects interest you, then you will enjoy the course. The Biotech group is small (18-25 max) and you will get the chance to mix well.
    Good luck with your exams.

Im not taking chemistry for the leaving cert,, would it be important for this course? is it not more biology based? .. could the chemistry be brought up to an acceptable standard in first year of the course..

You can do the course without doing chemistry for the leaving, just try to get to the chemistry tutorials to get used to answering exam papers. look up the course content on:http://www.nuigalway.ie/biotech/

I am in the final year of this course and I have to say I really enjoy it.
The best part by far is the final year lab placement, there are some great placements going where you can get great industry experience.
The course focuses a little more on the business side of things in comarison to other biology courses available.

You should be able to get up to standard with regards chemistry, but you will HAVE to put the work in early on, it is by no means an easy course. There is a lot of emphasis on biochemistry that you will struggle with without basic chemistry. I would certainly recommend if you are interested in the subject.
There is a very high work load in the 3rd and 4th year, as well as a foreign placement after 3rd year.
