Steam Wash Engine before NCT - Where?

    Hi,

My VW Passat (1.9 Diesel, 2001) is due an NCT tomorrow. I have some sort of a slight diesel leak and a garage recommended I get the top and bottom of the engine steam washed before the test and see how it gets through it.

Would anyone know where I could get this done? Somewhere around Leopardstown (near work) or Rathmines (near home).

    Any advice greatly appreciated.

Could the garage not do it for you?

The garage I went to didn't have that facility. Do you any that do?

You're in Leopardstown right? There's a load of garages in Sandyford industrial estate and all of them probably have the facilities.

Some of the better car valeting locations may have it too ;)

Do you see any problems with Stream washing an engine. would I be best leave it to a garage to do or would a valeting company be ok?

Why steam wash it? Unless it's unbelievably dirty. IMO it just exposes the electrics to unnecessary damage.

If you are under pressure a wipe of any diesel seen with a damp cloth will probably help. Don't think it will cause a failure of nct either way unless it is really all over the place. ;)

A diesel leak if detected, will fail the nct.

There is a fair amount of diesel built up there over the year. I want to clean it up and hopefully they won't notice it and then I can get it fixed after the NCT

Sorry Dapos, but you are fooling yourself............fix it now if you can afford it, fuel is expensive enough without losing the stuff........and then you can approach the nct with confidence.

I'd prefer to see if anything else is wrong with the car before spending a lot to fix a fuel leak (which I have fixed twice already). It's now a bad leak. I understand what you are saying though.

you could get some auto glym engine cleaner http://www.halfords.ie/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_11101_catalogId_15551_productId_155439_langId_-1_categoryId_212538

spray on loads and use a paint brush to scrub in. then rince off with low water presure from a hose. also spray some wd40 in any electrical conections before you start and keep the water away from them

Funny, I was just off the phone to a valenting company and that's what he recommended. That's my only option I think, Going to go with that.

Passed the NCT! Didn't do the steam wash in the end as advised. I bought degreaser but I wasn't sure which parts I should use it on so on;y barely used it. However I think i spotted the source of the diesel leak and I cleaned it up. It must not be leaking much. Must get it sorted out now.

By the way, does anyone know a link to an engine diagram to a VW passat 2001 diesel 1.9 B5.5? It's love to know what the part is that is at fault.

Also, I actually failed my NCT the first time round because I had a slight tear and hole on the bumper of my car, the guy in the NCT centre told me to get duct tape so I drove to topaz got some duct tape and put it on the bumper, brought it back and it passed!!! :):):)

So I had a diesel leak and a back door that you can only open/ lock manual and back window that won't open and they fail me on a hole in the bumper! Shows what a joke the test is.

id seek opinion of another garage.

power washing to find a leak in a diesel is bizarre./

Can you see the leaky bit on that picture?

I can't and I've searched for better pics on the net. I'm going to have to take a picture of it. It's circular, got 4 leads of some sort connecting into it and it's got a hexagonal or octagonal hole in the middel which seems to be pooling diesel.

That picture above is of a Bora which is totally different to a B5.5 Passat.

OP the part you are referring to is the fuel filter housing.

    Aye George is right.

I had to have mine replaced as it warped. A common enough issue on the early B6 Passat TDI. Didn't realise it also affected the B5.5.

It's not a major issue and can easily be done during a service when the fuel filter is being changed
