Why do emails disappear from my Inbox

Not sure this is the right place for this post, but I'll have a go.
My email provider is Eircom (eircom.net). I access it through the Eircom site. When I open the Eircom mail progam I can read newly arrived emails. However if I close down the program and then re-open, I find my Inbox is Empty. The emails that should be sitting in this box have disappeared. It is virtually impossible to get any technical support from Eircom without paying large sums of money. Can anyone suggest what might be wrong?

A couple of things to clarify...
    1) when you open your email using your web browser (https://secure.eircom.net/email?zinitmode=http), are the mails still in your inbox here?

    2) what is the name of the eircom mail program?
Does it have a 'Help' menu, containing an 'About' entry? If so can you click this and tell us what name and version it gives for the program.

    3) can you tell whether the mail is downloaded using POP3 or IMAP4?

    4) do you access the same mailbox using a mobile phone?

When I access email using web browser, only NEW emails are in the box. The old ones have disappeared.
There is a help menu but no 'about' box.
I do not access the same mailbox using a mobile phone.
I cannot find out from the website whether it is POP 3 or IMAP4? I dont see it anywhere.

So, the only way you access your emails is using a web browser like IE or Firefox?

Usually when emails are disappearing like this, a mail client like Thunderbird or Outlook Express is also downloading the emails, and is then marking them as deleted on the Eircom mail server. So when you look through the browser, only the new ones are present.

when I logged into my eircom.net mail account this evening all of the messages previously there had disappeared. All that was there was one new mail message that arrived this afternoon. No other folder has been affected.

No joy from eircom technical support . it looks for a landline number before I can proceed. I don't have one !. I am on Windows XP and Interne Explorer 8.

Is there anything I can do here, any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like there's a filter set to only display new/ unread messages. I'm not familiar with the interface but look for an option or drop-down box that might be doing this.

Thanks for the reply GerryR.......filters do not seem to be the problem, none set. All emails received since yesterday afternoon, read and unread, are still there today. Those before that time...gone !.

    Again, thanks for the advice

    Hi.
Try changing the password to the account. At least you'll be sure that email isn't getting downloaded from somewhere/someone else.
