these type ones. what are they like. there quiet a bit cheaper than the equivilant a4. Can remember reading about swirl flap problems and turbo issues. is this the engine or is this a good one? are all the 2.0 diesel 163 bhp. would they be powerful and what should the mpg be on motorway driving?
    are they 6 speed?

    nice cars.
    decent power
    decent mpg (50 motorway)
163bhp is standard until mid 2007, when it was increased to 177bhp (LCI).
    6 speed standard.

Swirl flaps can caue problems, some do, some dont. its relatively cheap to get the swirl flaps removed and blanks put in by a decent mechanic.

Conor in Scully Autocare in Clontarf do it for around €100.

Yep that's the confine your on about. But If the mileage is high you will probablly buy one which the turbo has being done on and if ur lucky the flaps also. If bought one r two including the 530d same aswell but always bought one with high enough mileage.as im working on bmws every day last thing I wana be doing is taking off my own manifold or changing the turbo

how much are new turbos and how much to rit roughly. also what sort of mileage does the turbo go at?

Turbos go about 80k to 90k if u get one with more then that chances are its being done.getting a turbo done in a garage would cost u a fortune but any good mechanic that's knows that engine would do it as a nixer cheap enough I think there about 400e for a recon one and about 2.5 hrs max to fit it.it can be done abit quicker but I'd say 600 r 700quid ta get it done. Just buy one with the turbo Done. And as soon as u buy the car make sure u get a turbo breather filter changed and it will prolong the turbo life.

If you look after it you won't have to worry about the turbo going too much.

BMWs have "long life" service intervals, so you can go anything up to 20,000 miles without servicing one. That is absolutely mental, the absolute most an engine should go without an oil change is 20,000 km.

The crankcase filter needs to be changed in them as well to keep the turbo happy.

The other reason the turbo goes in them (this is true for any diesel with a fairly specific output) is that when you take them for a decent run you have to work the turbo hard, nothing wrong with that but the turbo needs to be cooled down, as in it should be left idle for about 30 seconds before you turn it off (or a minute if it's been driven very hard indeed). If you turn it off straight away you're not giving the turbo a chance to cool down so you are shortening the turbo's life. Unfortunately a lot of people have no mechanical sympathy and drive the crap out of them and then turn them off straight away while the turbo is hot!

If you are set on one then a) get the oil changed at least every 20,000 km, b) remove the swirl flaps, this is not expensive to do, c) change the breather filter (or whatever the proper name for it is) and d) leave the turbo cool down every time you take it for a decent run, instead of turning off the engine and then putting on the handbrake and taking off your seatbelt do these things first then turn off the engine, at least that way you are giving the turbo a chance to cool itself down.

Turbos spin at up to 100,000 rpm, you can't just shut it down when it is running at those kind of speeds and not expect to suffer consequences in the long run!

Does this cooling off period also apply if you drive hard on a motorway then come off motorway and drive reasonably easy for a couple of miles before coming to a halt. I've always assumed OK if you drive easy for a period before shutting down .. Am I wrong again?

I had an E90 with 123k (miles on it) and it never needed turbo work.
As long as the oild is changed and the breather filter is changed every 2nd oil change, i think you'll be ok

that should be fine. 30 seconds of non boost should be fine also. you must remmember, even on the motorway at 70mph, your not on constant/high boost.

My E46 had 108K miles on it and has not given any turbo trouble. I changed the breather at 65K miles.

Nope, OP is talking about the E90, hence the E90 recommendations ;)
